What's the deal with the Lake Lyndon "range"?

Can anyone tell me what the deal is with the old "range" area out the back of Lake Lyndon? Been out there to sight rifles in a couple times a few years ago, but looking now it seems like it might be a no-go now? The DOC map shows "no hunting" in the range area. Does that just mean you can't kill anything? Or you're no longer allowed to fire a gun there? What's the deal?
If that area is closed now, where do people go now?
I want to shoot longer than 100m, and don't want to always have to wait for the NZDA range days..

Been discussed at length and is a no-go .DOC permits do not cover target shooting but are strictly hunting permits.

I have a spot in the St James that has a big hill behind it, have got out to 200m but its very weather dependant it can be breezy up there when dead calm in Hanmer itself. Oh and its not that flat either so not really bipod on the ground stuff, more like bipod or pack off the bonnet.
