Young Monty's first time shooting by himself

Makes me a proud Dad! He loaded the chamber, worked the bolt and cleared shell cases himself that didnt eject properly.
Even had a bit of 'cheek weld' on the stock!

He managed to shoot half a dozen of the small bits of orange clays too!

Good stuff. How old is he? I really need to do this with my boy, but he struggles with the scope. I see you have open sights.

@MB he is 4 in April.
Took a while for him to sus the sights.
To start with I held the gun and he worked the bolt and the trigger etc. Didnt hit anything but he liked it and taught him a little about keeping his finger off the trigger until ready etc.

    How old is yours?

Cheers. I'm way behind, mine is 7 years old. Loves hunting small game with me. Maybe I'll get him an air rifle.

    Awesome work Monty and Dad.

MB, I started my boy out when he was 5 with a BSA V Scout. He personally wasn’t ready before that age with the safety side of things. The gun, and many others like it, has low power (500 fps at best) which was great for him to learn on as it doesn’t kick or have a harsh jolt some springers do. I thought he was going to have difficulties with the open sights but he took to them with ease and it was getting him to use the scope that took a little bit of work. He’s 5 and a half now and loves to shoot the 22 when ever he can. He has a goal to get ten hits consecutively on a two inch target at 50 yards then he can take aim at live pray, he’s very close now. He’s my loyal hunting companion now, we’ve shot a few deer together and our first pig last Friday.

Good luck and enjoy! It’s a hell of a blast seeing him out there in the wild loving it!

Yeah, I had to get myself into it as Dad and mum split at an early age. (small violin plays)
I am envious of my kids life so far! Growing up in Suburbia without a dad is not ideal.

Had to re-zero a rifle and took the boy along. He was super keen to have a go. Despite my best efforts and patience, he just couldn't make the scope work for him. Recoil of a 300BLK subsonic round was a bit of a shock!

He loved it when I shot a brick and it disintegrated, probably not very responsible parenting!

Note, I did teach proper positioning and he had ear protection for firing. Maybe I should get him a single shot .22 with open sights or even an air rifle.

two things pop out to me from that photo..... he is square on to rifle, not offside shoulder back....being low recoil and benched like that you CAN get away with sitting recoil pad either above or below his shoulder IF YOU HOLD IT FIRMLY for him...he stil lgets to do the aim and fire thing, you just control rearward movement of rifle.
perfect use for subsonic rounds.....and shooting bricks is not as much fun as plastic milk bottles filled with water...picking up pieces afterwards is good teaching experience too.

He wasn't shooting from that position, just trying to work out the magic magnifying tube.

    He could be right eyed.
Eye dominance is far more important than left or right handedness.
Acertain his dominant eye and teach him to shoot left or right handed depending on that.
Probably still young enough to make him right eye dominant if he isn't?
