Thread: Zeroing for Stalking

Sorry if this has been asked before. What is your zero distance for stalk hunting in the bush? About 50m to 150m shot with a 308. Thanks!

100y man good for everything then

I have pretty much everything sighted for 100m. Maybe one of the 22s is sighted for 80m. But my own rule of thumb is 100m for everything and then learn your hold over. Has done me well for what I do mostly - pest control

I zero @200 yards for everything,

My .308 is sighted in at 172 metres. A handy spot from my bench. Close to dead on from 25 to 50 metres and within 40mm out to 200 metres. I can't think of any reason for sighting in closer. No hold over needed for all your hunting.

The Strelok app has a nice feature to calculate the recommended zero range based on your caliber and the size of the vital zone.

What everyone else has said

Sight it in for 100m then figure out the high/low of various ranges and hold over/under as appropriate.

Generally what you’ll find is by sighting at 100m you can aim at the Hilar kill zone bit of the deer from 10m out to about 200m.

200m for most of my rifles, 150m for the shorty 30-30.
It will be bang on somewhere around 25m, and no more than 5cm high or low from 25-250m

Those of us who started our hunting when a laser rangefinder was science fiction and scopes were 4 power assumimg you had one were very keen on what we called point blank range. This is the scope setting where you can aim dead on and hit your target at any range out to a maximum. You may have spotted a post by @Micky Duck on the rule of three. Zeroing at 100 metres just seems foriegn to us.

Yeah, I'm with cigar and grandpamac. I'm 5cm high at 100m and so good out to around 220m without any thinking.

yeah mate...and just like ex cullers...just cause its old doesnt mean it doesnt still work......simple is good...anyone who knows me knows Im a bit simple so maybe thats why it works for me.

Well I just keep the 1 zero, wither I'm in the bush or on a farm or tops. I would not change my zero based on the hunt.
For me with 223, 243, 358 win they are all zeroed at 200 mtr.

if you look at the old chart.....that makes lots of sense .... I dropped my height at hundy to 2" as find I shoot over top on wallabies if go 3" high...and it makes more sense when I dont often shoot to 300 let alone beyond it.
