Another Taranaki Memeber

Hi everyone

My names Leigh and I currently a Junior Draughtsman and part time student.

Had my FAL for a few years now. mostly went possum hunting with friends once or twice a year and occasionally center fires when I was a cadet. lately been getting into goat hunting and been going out every couple of weekends.
Having not fired many center fires I still get a fright and flinch at the shot sometimes hence the name flincher. Got a parker hale 243 with an 18inch barrel that I have done a bit of target shooting with and my shooting is getting much better.
270s and 308s I find a bit too much for me.

Been going goat hunting a lot lately still trying to work on calming my self down and my breathing to make my shot placement better. Was surprised how tasty goat is if its cooked properly.

Lots of info here about almost everything. and just going to start reloading soon too.

Welcome Flinch....have to get rid of that....are you holding the rifle 'hard into your shoulder'?....thats how i got used to mine, get used to firing it first, work on accuracy later...your not the first and wont be the last!!!!!!

Hey bud, graduate engineer here in New Plymouth :) Will be trying to pop out over the next few weekends for some goat trips, so gimme a buzz if your'e keen for a tag along or to tee up a trip! :)

Always keen to head out. Its a little busy with mid semester break coming up so assignments are all due at the same time. but a day out always sounds good.

I'm doing the diploma in mechanical engineering atm. Would like to get my degree but just depends were i want to head in the future.

Welcome fincher! Can certainly catch up as well... sounds like your off in the right direction though - I also do a bit of reloading if ya interested drop us a line sometime...

Firstly get some ear plugs secondly get some muffs.
go to your range
Wear both at the same time.
Dry fire(pull trigger on empty chamber) many times to be sure you are not flinching.
While doing that pull rifle into shoulder.
Commence live fire lean into rifle and or pull butt into shoulder.

with hearing protection on and leaning into it I bet you think "what the Fuck was i flinching for"

noise not recoil is the major cause of flinches.

Welcome Flincher. Dry fire, dry fire dry fire and then dry fire some more. VC's recommendation regarding hearing protection is wise as is Scouser's butt into shoulder advice.

Cheers i will do. Just need powder and primer now. got lots of brass and a steal on 300 projectiles.

Thanks heaps.!!!
Shot 3 groups with the 270 today at the range. After settling my nerves after the first group. i was getting groups of 1.5inchs at 100yds. About what everyone else does with highland ammo in the rifle.
Still kicks lots but its easier to shoot. Usually i have had enough after 2 shots, i could of shot more but ran outa ammo.

Just waiting on my 243 bedding job to finish. Hopefully get a lot more relaxed at shooting targets now.

Pull the rifle into your shoulder hard and lean into the shot while standing. Felt recoil when shooting prone is greater.

I found sitting was worse. But this time i pulled the chair back a bit more and lent into it. All of them helped alot. But for my shooting ill stick to a the 243 for a while. Mostly shooting goats.
