    Auckland / northland based

    Hi all,

Have been reading the forums for a few years but about time I created an account. Auckland based, with land up north. Interested in pest control mostly, rabbits and possums. Have experience with 22lr and 223.

Currently looking into night shooting and wondering what the best entry is into something like night vision or thermal. I’m assuming for rabbits and possums, a night vision scope like a Pard FD compact (https://pard.nz/pard-fd-compact/) would be the best starting point over a thermal?

    Cheers
    Jesse

Welcome. Ive got nv and thermal budget gear and do possum shooting on a couple of farms. Ive found I tend to use the thermal now for spotting them and then still use the light on the rifle when shooting. I dont really like doing it but if they want me to shoot close to houses and sheds etc Ill use thermal then nv and subs and suppressor.
may be sarcastic may be a bad joke

Thanks blip, do you mean you prefer not to use the NV and the spotlight is still best? I’m going to be 80% rabbits I think, which scatter from spotlighting after a while.

Definitely sounds like a thermal for spotting is really helpful. Presumably the cheap thermals are good enough for spotting anything within a hundred metres or so these days?

I found with the thermal its quicker to do a quick scan as Im just looking for heat where the nv you still need to look at everything like using a light. Plus I think the light is still habbit. Looking through the nv stuffs up my night vision for a bit as well
