Thread: Cascade hut

Well TonyR, I take my hat off to you for wanting to go to the Cascade in the early days of winter. I feel cold just thinking about it. Make sure that you, or your mate are not of the whinging type as there is nothing worse than spending your whole trip wondering if you will get away with murder just for some peace and quiet. It will be bone chilling cold at the Cascade at this time of year and what ever your sleeping bag is rated at, it wont be enough. See if you can score some long heavy duty plastic bags [we used vacuum packing bags from the meat works] to use over your boots and legs for river crossings...you may look a dork doing it but, hey, dry is good.
I have used both stalking and sit-and-wait for sika, both are productive, although I found the sit-and-wait needed a long range rifle in the Kaimanawas and Kawekas as it is a bloody long way across some of those gullies.
