    Christchurch Bound

Hey all. I'm over the lack of work in Welly and am looking to move to Chch in a months time.
I'm a qual builder. Lbp . Certified builder member. Been self employed for 6 years. Any info on someone needing an awesome builder much appreciated.
What are current rents like? Are they as bad as the media say?
    Help appreciated.

Good luck Ants I lived in Chch through both of the quakes. Rent depends on who you are and what you want to put up with. I ended up living with a family out near-ish Rolly because of my dog's needs. If you are a single dude that doesn't mind flatting you might not have as hard a time as you think. If you have a house full of kit and want your own place, if you come with a dog(s) etc it's pretty tough.

Before the family bording I jumped around seven different flats over one year because I am a picky b*tch and unfortunately a few of the nice people I lived with felt they needed to indulge in a little "stree relief" from now and then and that conflicted with my job. I was paying between $120-$210 per week depending on the house.

    I hope this helps.

Yeah that's pretty much the kind of family that is out of house and home in Chch so you'll be one of many looking to rent!

If you can get in Darfield you can commute, premo hunting and fishing.

Renting is quite gay. Even harder to try to buy. Our house is 3 bed in hornby, 360 a week. Rolly is so nice, but a wee way to travel if your on the other side of town. Not that hornby is any good, just the lesser of two evils really.

    Good luck!

There are a lot of builders in ch ch that have not done hill work , even though we got port hills , housing companies focus on flat land. The port hills got hammered , so there will be a heap of rebuilds and renos . so I'm assuming a builder from welly would hold his own on a hill ? . If so you'll be in demand so will the lad

Don't scoff at commuting from out of town. I have a few friends who have decided to move out of town and are loving it.

Don't be afraid to look outside of town, a lot of people I know and myself live out of town now. Takes me about 30 minutes to get to work and traffic is not bad and I mean not bad at all as I use to live in England.
When you get settled pm with your mobile and I can always put it up on the notice board at work (Air New Zealand). People always asking for good builders.

Also I have heard it is best to sign up with EQC, Someone might know more about that then me as I am not a builder.

I on the other side of Springston, commuted to the airport every day (usually twice in a 24hr period, gotta love shift work!). Back roads I really enjoyed it out there. Just need to plan your trips to town a bit better - there's no 'nipping down to the dairy for milk' option really.
