    Complete Newbie!

    Hi Everyone

Names Nick and live in the Rangitikei region. Completely new to hunting but keen to get out on my first hunt. Looking to explore the Ruahines, Whanganui and possibly up to Kaimanawas & Kawekas. Haven’t done a lot of shooting but was lucky enough for my uncle to give me a Wischo .22 and Sako Vixen L461 .222 to practice with!
Will be looking for my own larger caliber for deer stalking soon, not confident enough yet with the treble for correct placement on deer etc.
Anyway looking forward to it all, love all the good info on here for tips and tricks!

    Cheers, Nick

    Welcome!
You will have to be selective with your shots with the 222 but it will do the job if you do pick your shots.

(I know guys that have shot tahr and wapiti with their 222s.)

Thanks Finnwolf, good to know. From what I understand got to be sensible with range, closing distance and limiting to head and neck shots when it’s appropriate. I enjoyed watching the NZHA show with Willie jumping on the .222 Sako in the ruahines definitely showing it can still be a useful caliber!

whatever you do...DO NOT EVER no matter what...sell that trebly...I can 1000% guarantee if you do it will be a lifelong regret.
welcome aboard, you in good part of the country and what a fantastic decade to live in with animals numbers higher than any time I can recall in last 40 years.
there are plenty of meat hunt options close to you....pay small fee and get guided to shoot free range animal on farmers land and take it home.... not a bad option starting out when you have little idea of whats what.
check the 223 on deer thread to give idea on what trebly will do.

Thanks Micky Duck, technically the Sako’s still my uncles, I just get to use, look after and keep in my safe so definitely won’t be selling anytime soon! Thanks for advice re paid meat hunts- have seen a few of these on trademe in the Wanganui region at reasonable prices too. Having a read through the .223 thread- cheers.
