    Coote from Nelson

    Howdy. Just joined this forum.

I live in Nelson where I like to grow a bit of my own food and hunt for meat. I don't get out as much as I'd like to, but I enjoy anticipating the next outing.

I have done a lot of shooting, having grown up in a time when military-style shooting was done at some high schools. I have a fondness for simple equipment and open sights.

Below is a picture of myself taken by a buddy who captured one of my most surprising moments.

Welcome Coote. Great photo by the way.

Were you trying to stick the levergun up one nostril before you fired?

Yo Vietnamcam. You once gave me some .308 brass which was a very nice gesture. I don't have a .308 now, but I learned a bit playing around with it.

Ah... yes... the picture. I did miss with my first shot. If you look closely you will see the hammer is down but the pig is still up.

Ideally the gun should have been pointing at the hog before I squeezed the trigger. However, in the excitement, I ejaculated the lead prematurely. Fortunately the muzzle blast only a few inches from the pig's earhole caused the animal to pause and contemplate the situation thus giving me the opportunity to shoot again.

Yes... I knew Pat Win. He was the engineering teacher and a pretty good bloke. Alan Walker was another teacher who got involved with the shooting at college. Jim Upton was the college caretaker for a while, but prior to that he was a sargeant-major (I think) in the NZ Army. I remember participating in a shoot where he was in charge and he tuned me up for 'palming' my bolt. Did you go to Nelson College 6 x 47?

Coote does the name BIll Lake mean anything to you? Think Nelson College, English teacher and no right hand.

I shot many rounds out of a .22 training rifle up at the range behind Barnicoat and Fell House at Nelson Boys in my day .
Not many young people would believe you these days when you tell them you shot rifles at school, at the schools own range and the school provided ammo .
Also made a few SLR barrels glow hot during School Army Cadet training during my time at Nelson Boys .

Yeh, by co-incidence. I wasn't one of Pat's boys but you may recall being beaten in .303 shooting. Not that I'm gloating That's a looong time ago.
