For what it's worth, if you end up with a Ruger I found after trialling lots of different ammo it liked being fed CCI - I use subsonics mostly.

There's a pistol range opp the Gladstone pub and Collings and Bradey in Costley St in CTN

If you want a good grounding in the basics I can really recommend the HUNTS course run by your local deerstalkers - I know the local one here in the Hutt is good and someone closer to the Wairarapa one should be along soon to help with how their one is run - it's not all kids doing it, plenty of adults who want to learn
