    Gidday all, Hawkes Bay newbie

    Hi all,

Im new to this forum, and new to hunting also. Im looking to get out and see a bit of primo country, and hopefully see some deer! Was looking at the Kawekas around Makahu Saddle car park area. Is this a good place to start? Any tips or advice for me would be awesome.

    Cheers guys

Welcome mate! Yep you dont have to walk too far from the carpark to find deer.

Im far from an expert, but here are a few things ive learned. If in the bush, go very slowly once you find sign, do a lot of scanning around looking before moving a little bit again and repeat. If you are up above the bush line, find a good vantage point looking over warm sunny faces/bush edges, you can often see animal tracks sidling across the commonly used faces. Use your binos alot, deer can just suddenly appear seemingly out of nowhere.

Sika being smaller animals lose heat faster so love the sun in winter. If hunting in the morning in winter dont pack it in too early, they may not venture out into the sun until late morning once the sun has a bit more bite in it.

    Thanks GWH,

Thats great advice! Much appreciated. Do you take the walking tracks in, and then climb a ridge from there? Sorry, probably a daft question, but my only hunting experiences so far have been cruising farms in the ute!

    G'day Durrie

Welcome to the best hunting and shooting forum on the net.

Yes Makahu is a good place to start.

Head out towards Kaweka Flats, check out some of the creeks and streams and do what @GWH said.

Also have a think about joining up with the Napier Deerstalkers Club.

Meetings are 7:30pm last Monday of each month. Thorne place Onekawa

    Cheers

    Hi Pete,

Thanks for that mate. Im seriously looking at the deerstalkers, but my wife is on shift work, and am usually left with kids, so might be hard to get to meetings unfortunately. Ill figure something out hopefully. In the meantime, this forum will be a great help !

Dundee, I know where Snee rd is. Keen to get into the Ruahines too, Mum grew up in that area, and spent a lot of time there as a lad, so It would be awesome to get into some of that country too! Getting a bit of meat would be a nice bonus.

    @Durrie

    No worries mate.

I did 20 odd years of shift work myself so understand.

Watch those bloody buggers south of ypuk too ....
They'll put you crook, send you on a wild goose chase down Snee Road, force you to drink Lion Brown cans and drown your food in tomatoe sauce.

Aside from that they're not a bad bunch of bastards as far a bastards go.

    Cheers

Na mate never. Salt water, spearfishing and free diving. My wife would just about be a widow if I took up another form of fishing! Prefer a smoked kingi to trout to be honest.
