Thread: got a keen son in wellington

hi just joined forum as keen to take my son hunting
we live in wellington now i grew up in the south island on a farm and would love to get kids out hunting as i did when i was a lot younger got to get them off the computers haha
wondering as never been out around wellington but if anyone able to suggest some places we could go some with huts be good as he keen to do the overnight

Hey @dawson welcome there was some talk on here a little while ago about a place Wellington way with goats.
That might be a nice starter for you.....I'm sure someone local will be along to help you out soon, enjoy the forum..

I'm in exactly the same boat as you. Just got my licence and rifle and keen to get out walking, make some goat curry and get my son off the bloody xbox! I'd be really interested to know some general locations for goats too.

Also looking for someone else to go out hunting with, safety in numbers and all that.

I did spot a family of them last week around the south of the Rimutakas but I was on a public path and a couple of hundred metres outside the hunting block. All I could do was shake my fist and swear at them as they looked on at me!

Welcome to both new members and good on you for wanting to get the kids outdoors. There are plenty of Wellington members on here that will be along soon enough with suggestions. In the meantime visit the doc website and see what you can find.

There's a doc map which has the hunting area over lay. Anything in the tararuas will have reds and goats. Will plenty of deer near East bourne hahaha.

Head into the Tararua's. Totara Flats or Tutuwai hut, plenty of deer around without having to waste time chasing smelly goats. Take a telescopic fishing rod with you as well.

TBH mate, i'd just get the Spot X book and work off that. Any spot i'd suggest for you as a starter is all in there anyway, and a whole heap more!

Every so often i go back and flick through mine which is an older one so has less content in it. Its always surprising how many spots are in it, complete with the maps and how to hunt each of the various areas. There great books and very affordable for whats in them.

Then just pick a few spots in there and keep going back again and again to learn the movement patterns of the animals in the area and you'll be away.

@aetchell and @dawson. lads just pick a location and hunt the shit out of it again and again and again. 99% of my hunting is the Rimutakas and Tararuas, both areas that get high pressure but yet I do quite well. After you explore an area and get to know it with your eyes close, you will soon be beating the deer of with a stick as you will see more and more of them.

cant go wrong with that advice, cant say about the fishing though

eastern rimutakas if you want a goat

make sure you are properly prepared and equipped none of these places are 'easy hunting'

Me and the boy went out this weekend to southern Rimutakas (Remutakas now...) for our first hunt. Managed a 25km treck and got a pig. It wasn't a clean shot i'm embarrassed to say and we had to put another round in it to put the poor fella out of his misery. This first kill is going to haunt me for a long time but i think it will make me consider my shots a lot more in future. we did see a couple of goats and what looked like a massive pig (although the size could have been wishful thinking). They managed to leg it before I could get the gun ready though. We will be returning to this spot in the future @dawson message me if you fancy going for a tramp with me and the boy at some point.

It is never a good thing when the first shot doesn't result in a clean kill but don't beat yourself up as it happens. At least you never lost the animal and were able to despatch it.

Good stuff. Im keen to head out. My boys also like to come.
