    HELLO :-)

Hi guys n gals. hello and thanks for letting me join. quick run down of my history. i did smallbore shooting as a young fella. have always been interested in target shooting. i have done a little bit of small animal shooting. now days im more into air pistols n rifles as i had limited time and space to shoot. love the airguns tho and i have several powerful ones, including one that shoots a .50 caliber round ball. i also have a shotgun. felt it was time to join a forum tho as im looking finally into buying land so i will have the space to shoot. im looking at longer range target shooter, 3-400m so any advice on that would be good. i will be going through the forum records to see what people have said in the past. but by the looks a .223 bolt action suppressed would suit. i just dont know if a store brought one for like under $1k would suit that or what the story is. but eager to learn. thanks again for the join, cheers Mark

Hi mate, from what iv googled, it will shoot the range I’m looking for, bullets are cheaper than bigger calibers, but quieter, things like that. But I’m not tied to it that’s why I’m here. To learn I had a 243 many years ago but the farm was massive. I’m looking at a 54acre place at the mo n it’s near lifestyle blocks so I’m a little cautious with them

yep 223 is cheap but if you want to target shoot 400ish there are better options like 6,5gr, 6.5cr and the mighty 7mmRM. the 243 isn a bad round either but was considered a medium/long range varmint round.
after stalinda took my AR i bought a norinco 223 to use the ammo. never even shot it before i got a howa mini action 223 to replace it and these things are great ( still havent used mine yet as the rings cracked when fitting the scope)

Small cal centrefires are capable of throwing a pill ay outside 50 acres . A safe background is essential for any centrefire. Even a .22 will go a mile. In other words, a .308 is a good choice for deer sized game.
    Anyway, hi and enjoy.

mmm ok will look into the cailbers as well. would it have to be an expensive 223 to be fairly accurate at 400m?

stink re Stalinda. iv seen those mini action howas on a few sites so i will be interested to see how you go on that. what range are you planning with that?

and i will post a pic of my airguns

thanks woody, good info too. yeah she backs onto hundreds of kms of bush so im good to go there. i would never fire in the direction of the lifestyle blocks. but my max target range i could set up there would be 400m. cheers

308 is a damn good choice @Woody . if you cant kill it with a 308 in nz you are too far away or a lousy shot.
i shot 308 for 30 years before i went 7mm. best of all you can buy it anywhere.
now ignore @Phil_H he's just jealous because he is the one thats a sex object: he asks for sex and women object

    Welcome!

The biggest issue IMHO is wind drift with 223 at longer distances. 400 and 600 is definitely well within it's capability but the wind starts to push the small projectile quite a bit. Also i'ts usually more difficult to observe the bluet strike at this range than say a 6.5 or .308 projectile.

    ...long for cartridge maybe.
Nothing wrong with .223. Certainly cheap and cheerful.

Depending how you've been stretching the airguns/rimfire, it's basically an extension of the skills, range estimation (/knowledge) and wind reading.

I'm always leary of store package specials. I haven't seen one put together properly yet. Plenty of good deals come up here. $1k isn't super money but will certainly buy you something very decent.

...am I allowed to mention tikka yet, or is it too early in the day for fights?

oh, and creedmore only if you have a man-bun, neck-beard and iPhone attached to your non-wanking hand.
Ha cheers , ok longish one maybe if a club is near by i will get it to 1000yards. I tried that in Aussie n that was cool. But on my prospective land, 3-400 which is why I thought 223 would do the job. As for store brought, that is what I was wondering and thought would be the case so a deal on here one day with a proven rifle maybe the way to go. I def don’t have a man bun ;-0

as with 308 ammo of 223 is pretty much everywhere which is good while hunting and less hassle when flying
223 will drift though, its a pretty light slug. at the end of the day it a case of hunt/target and range/knockdown.

i still want to see this 50 cal though

@ops is it ok to post?
