    Hello..

Hope I'm in the right place.
I collect the odd smelly, and other classic military or early repeaters. Anything that takes my interest really. Like to shoot as well, hoping to get out a bit more.
Been interested in this since I stumbled upon it during a search. Have other interests as well, but happy to learn a few new things.

Yep, the handle was a bit rushed at the time. Maybe some cheeky fw@k will come up with something else along the way, more appropriate.

Thanks for the welcomes, happy to receive.
So what are we going to do about the incentive for police to remove our licences?
Farmers put on a pretty good show a few weeks ago. A lot of you guys will fall into that basket. Why should it stop at carbon foot prints? They are pulling the rug out from under us effectively.
I know a lot will agree. Recent member of the community, so maybe this has run its course already. But after being informed by an arms officer, it bothers me even more.
He pretty much said you can have your licence revoked over traffic fines. He was pretty good about it, non threatening... but thats how it is now.
    What to do?

This is a very good question and I do not have the answer. As responsible firearms license holders there is an onus upon us not to act in a manner that could alarm or be perceived as threatening to members of the public. That said, I participated in a couple of protests against the buy back in Auckland and they were by and large completely ineffective in getting the message of injustice across so I believe there is a need to protest in a manner that grabs greater attention (again I don’t know how). Whilst it grates against every fibre of my make up to promote civil disobedience, doing something more attention grabbing seems to me to be warranted. The challenge is to moderate the action so that is is seen as being a reasonable venting of frustration rather than a bunch of fight wing rednecks nutting off.

I wonder what the annual national turnover is for firearms related hobbies, pest control, hunting, competitive sports, recreational, tourism, etc. ie: contribution to the economy. What would happen if that all just stopped?
    Food for thought.

Maybe I'm on the wrong thread.

    Greetings 303shooter,
First welcome to the Forum. Regarding the arms legislation and enforcement thereof Rushy has summed it up well. Firearms owners in NZ are a minority and need to present a responsible face to the balance of the community. Fight wing rednecks nutting of in their echo chambers, spouting conspiracy theories and bare faced lies, do nothing to help our cause and likely rather less than that. Thanks for that descriptive bit of prose Rushy. The answer lies with us. First we should all belong to a firearms oriented club with a national organisation. This gives us a voice. Second we need to let the general public see firearms owners behaving responsibly. The firearms law we now have should have been in place 25 years ago. John Banks, the National Police Minister at the time, could not convince his colleagues that a buy back of the recently imported AK47 look alike rifles was needed. Kea guns(sawn off 410 shotguns with a pistol grip) had been bought back recently at the time. Contrary to the doom merchants predictions I don't believe that any party is likely to revisit firearms law in the near future and we need to learn to live with what we have. As far as your firearms licence being cancelled along with your drivers licence perhaps the answer lies with us. If the police decide that someone who is unsafe with motor vehicle may also be unsafe with a firearm it is hard to argue with that.
    Regards Grandpamac.

Morning, in reply to your last sentence, the courts decide your peril, not the Police. Some officers would be happy to be given this jurisdiction.

Once it is before a court, the reasonable bar for losing your FAL on that account should be an outright LOSS of your driving license.

A few speeding tickets...yet society still trusts you with a motor vehicle ... and a half decent lawyer could then argue it is inconsistent to then take the FAL.

Just think annual road toll vs. firearms toll.

Loss of FAL would not apply to a FAL holder who cannot drive due to, say, loss of peripheral vision, but it might apply for persistent speeders, drink drivers, etc. where it leads to loss of driving license.
