Hi neighbor....it is a 10 hour return trip by horse to see my nearest neighbor on Thompson's...and it is 100 km from car park to car park by road and 22 km by track.

Welcome along. This place hasn’t dried up but some of its members are crusty old buggers.

    Welcome fallow 35 cal shooter,
I run the somewhat smaller 358 Win in a lever action.
Question for you , Any idea how long to walk up Thompsons from your side to the Nth Sth track. I have done the Waikato side a number of times in the 1990's.

NB I said walk and that's for 2-3 guy's in their 50's and in winter with it slippery, or is this just not even a recommended option.
Hunting mate just south of you at Whakamarama has done the loop walks from there, did see 1 and some sign but it's tight off track over summer.
Just thinking of a 3 day weekend and a hut stay.

Waikato side carpark is 7 km to summit...Katikati side carpark is 14 km to summit...if you wander right over I can give you a box of reloads for your .358 Win that a mate left here...he wont need them anymore as he no longer has the gun.

Thanks all for the welcoming welcome. I have yet to walk to the top of the track katikati side. Lots of sign along the bush line. Slowly slowly neak along at relaxed animal grazing pace looking looking creepy creeping listen wait look sneak and peek.... the deer will get curious and come for a look trying to get down wind of you for a sniff and a jacksee.... be relaxed and ready for the dinner shot.....

Thanks David, 14km is too far for me to be interested in walking up a slippy clay track so we may go in further south. I guess the maintenance dose not go anywhere near as far up as the NZTOPO maps suggest.

And Guy's never underestimate the damage that a 35 cal soft bullet can do, that 225 gr Seirra Game king is destructive on North island deer. That extra diameter at 9.1mm just lends so much more shocking splat factor even if the velocity is a little done on a 308 or 30/06. I see guys driving the 35 Whelen with a 200 gr at up to 2900 fps.

Hi 35, With a Bush edges on your block you are in the box seat for some organic meat. Happy Hunting.

Maintenance $'s on Thompson's is or was $3000 from Waikato side to summit per year and zero $'s on BoP side...Waikato side saves their $'s for a few years before having a spend up.
