    Hi All

    New to Forum

Have been low-key involved with firearms for a while, really wanting to ramp things up and get into both range shooting and a bit of hunting if I can figure out what I should be doing! Glad there is a forum like this and have appreciated the buy-sell-swap page too.

Dive right in. Do you need a rifle that can do both or will you look at getting different set ups for each?

It takes 43 muscle's to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger pull.

I can afford to get one good rifle at this point, so definitely want something that could do both. I have been looking at the 300 PRC for the range but am worried that will not work very well for hunting as I’ve been told it will just bore right through deer if they are close. I don’t want to just wound things so unsure what to get at this point. Tips welcome

    Welcome to the forum.

Oh goodie another "what caliber" thread If you want one rifle to do almost everything go with a 308. 223 is good too but a bit risky for larger critters without good shot placement

Thanks everyone! I really appreciate the expertise. Today I got myself a Tikka .308 (one of the strata ones) and a Leupold VX-5HD. Stoked with it! May it serve me well for many years!

Well done. Good rifle, great calibre and good glass. Make the effort to get the CDS turrets.

The 308 is one cal I've not bought yet. It's a fair monster for power out to say 450m so that's doing all your hunting. It's not the worst long distance cal, you can shoot them at modern ranges using electronic targets.

I recently learned the .243 from Tikka comes with a 1/8 barrel twist. That would be a good runner up option as it could stabilize the heavier 6mm bullets
