    hi there

    Hi
    Jack here, from Christchurch.
Not sure what to say except that I'm new to all this. Quite busy at work (IT) so not too many free weekends.
22LR and 12ga (and probably 7mm08 planned), I like rabbit hunting (for stew and dog food) but don't know anyone with land to hunt on, so usually just go and take very long walks around DOC-managed land. I'm not very good at it though, I suppose
    Anyways.
Would be keen to learn and partner up with some people that know what they're doing. Would be keen to go deer hunting but not even sure where to start (and borrow a centerfire from.
I only hunt what I can eat.

308 is a good all rounder that you can load a variety of loads for. shot many an animal with one before i got the 7mm rem mag

yep, you can load saboted 50 grains up to 240 grain subs in a 308. can low load them for subsonic too and still get good knockdown.

Hi @anothermous Welcome. As you may have noticed, you managed to kick off the "this calibre is best argument on your first post. Dont take it personally, you will soon get to know it is an ongoing discussion that I am sure will have no end.

For a centrefire, there are a number f things to consider . Price, quality, budget, use, and ammo. I will probably get flamed for this, but in NZ anything from 243 to 7mm08, 308, 270, 30/06, 6.5x55, and anything in between, will do you well for any game you might come across in this great country.

If you have not shot a lot, the only advice I will offer is look for economical calibre / brands of ammo. Start with lots of practise and get used to your rifle. Get good at it and that takes ammo, ammo and a bit more ammo. This would be the main reason I would usually suggest a 308. There is a lot of ammo about for it, some as little as $28 per box for hunting ammo. If you get 7mm0-8 or many of the other calibres you may find ammo starts at quite a bit more for a box.

And if you are not working Tuesday noghts, it could be worth visiting the Handloaders range on their public night. (or deerstalkers on their public days.) Clubs are often a great way to get started at meeting fellow hunters.

    Welcome.
It takes 43 muscle's to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger pull.
What more do we need? If we are above ground and breathing the rest is up to us!
Rule 1: Treat every firearm as loaded
Rule 2: Always point firearms in a safe direction
Rule 3: Load a firearm only when ready to fire
Rule 4: Identify your target beyond all doubt
Rule 5: Check your firing zone
Rule 6: Store firearms and ammunition safely
Rule 7: Avoid alcohol and drugs when handling firearms

    @anothermous, welcome.

I suggest, before you get a 7mm08, (or 308, it doesn't really matter too much ) you have a look at a 223.

Practicing with a 223 is much cheaper than 7mm08 or 308.

Practicing with a 223 that you've reloaded the ammo for, is cheaper still.

Welcome Jack, I'm also in the "southern smog zone" . 7mm08 is a good all round club, buy what you fancy 👍
