    Hi from Timaru

Hey guys, I'm new here. Fairly new hunter, been out a couple of times and bagged 2 red deer on borrowed gear(first kill was a 12pt stag!). Looking to get Into hunting more seriously, and fill the freezer. Mostly aiming for deer, but keen as to knock over a tahr and chamois if the opportunity arises. If anyone knows a good spot for hunting in the region I would be keen to hear about it!

That's down in Gore off a farm block. The farmer is selling up, so will no longer have access also a 5 hour drive from home

Welcome. A twelve is not a bad way to kick off hunting.
It takes 43 muscle's to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger pull.

I feel like a broken record. There's a doc website that has a map. There's an over lay for open hunting areas. Go to walking access site. It'll have where you can walk to access it.

    A permit and you're away

kidmac42 there's a warm welcome if ever I heard one I'm not looking for handouts, was more looking for a point in the right direction. More along the lines of "I have had success near "A", but nothing at "B", saw a few at "C" etc
I am well aware that a huge part of hunting is humping it up and over the hills, sometimes not seeing a thing, I relish the prospect. Just seeing if anyone knew of some productive sites to hunt. I'm new to the area as well as hunting.

Russian 22, the only two times I have been out hunting we're on private land, im not familiar with the doc sites. Thanks for the heads up I'll look into it now.

Settle Gretal, take a chill pill Bill. No one owns a public land hunting spot and while many of us will not give up hard earned knowledge of productive spots, others are equally happy to share their knowledge for whatever reason motivates them to do so.

Welcome Cam Flatt nice stag you got there! Took me two years to shoot my first back in the 90s and another one to get my first stag. Yet to get 12 points on the ground. Good luck for the future DOC land hunts.
