    Hi from whangarei

    Hi team
just joined as i want to learn more about trajectories of centrefire rifles as i have just bought my first centrefire.

I'm 33, have four children and have done a lot of small game shooting over my life with .22 but now getting into chasing larger game like goats and pigs, i'm a keen but inexperienced hunter. The main reason is my son is nearly 13 so want to get him into it, he's a great shot already on the rabbits and possums and i like getting out with him into the wilderness. I started to shoot ducks this season just gone as well which i thoroughly enjoyed and will always take the victims for the freezer.

I've just bought a cheap 223 to learn with so will be doing some research on how to sight it in, i know this will snowball into something over the top as all my other hobbies have in the past.

I'm also into golf (just gave up so need a new hobby), i keep tropical fish, into old v8 holdens and also volunteer at my local fire brigade. I intend to understand the sciences of how it all works to be as accurate as possible, big fan of killing quickly not just shooting it any where.

i look forward to learning lots and maybe even being helpful myself if possible.

Welcome - I'm from around here

DOC land holds plenty of goats - Tangihua's is one place - rather steep

Forestry companies often give out permits, month by month - Hancocks down port road
BUT they restrict access over the school holiday period - so likely they are closed before you get a block - still worth asking

    Welcome aboard ...

You've done the right thing in buying a 223, they're an excellent entry level centrefire rifle, especially if your boy is going to shoot. The good thing about them is the ammo's easy to get and about the cheapest you'll find.

I just did the NZDA Hunts course with my boy , who is 14. It was excellent !! thoroughly recommended !!

Anyway, dont be shy about asking questions on here - everyone is more than willing to share

    Tim

    thanks guys.
i am very familiar with the tangihuas, i grew up at the foot of them but have never ventured in with a rifle. I have done plenty of possum shooting on a farm that borders them so i'll try to get out there for a walk, thanks for the heads up. I live the other side of town now but a couple of generations of family are still out there.
I decided to go with 223 after looking at charts of various projectiles. they seem to be a lot flatter over 200 compared to others like 7.62x39 and i'm not going to have a crack at anything more than 150, i'll simply get closer.

Hi faregame, nice to see a local. I'm out whangarei heads, what part of town you located?

If you are interested in going into the Tangihuas it may be worthwhile getting in contact with the Department of Conservation and try to get access in from the Tangihua Road end.
Iv been in there from the Omana Road entrance twice in the last month and have only seen a small amount of sign. Still a nice walk however.

    thanks for the welcome.
was that up near the lodge? I know three or four farmers that border the ranges on the eastern/north eastern side so when i decided to go in i think i have a yarn to them to see what they know or have seen recently. I did hear they were getting a few pigs coming out onto one of the farms and knocked a few over at the end of last summer so might see if i can get a bit of that action. First i need to sight this gun in properly, probably change optics first then see what we can bag.

Yeh The normal public access point is along the road to the lodge, If you have access from a farm to the north you should be all good. have heard of people sighting goats to the north as they have been going up the track to the horokaka repeater.

Maybe we should organise a Northland Forum goat and pig hunt up the Tangihuas or Puketi forest?
