Hi all,
Had my hand slapped for posting without an intro so apologies for my bad manners! Was after some advice about hunting a new area and believe there is nothing better than local experience and advice. Happy to give it as well as receive it where I can.
I was born and bred in Invercargill and Queenstown and grew up fishing the lakes and rivers in the South. Apart from rabbit shooting, I didn't really get into hunting until I started a Hunting club at Massey in the 90's. Shame I didn't start earlier as my old man was one of Fiordland's sons and would have been a great teacher.
I have now been based in the North Island for the last 25 years. Always trying to find an excuse to get back home which usually involves hunting, diving or fishing. Fiordland, Greenstone and Stewart Island will always be my favourite places but have spent more time bushhunting in the Kaimanawas than anywhere else. Lived in the USA for a couple of years and did some Whitetail and Wapiti hunting in Montana.
Family constraints have restricted my hunting forays to local day trips in the Manawatu so crayfish diving has been my main vice in recent years. However I took my eldest out for his first hunt a couple of weeks ago so may be able to do some more trips in the near future. Need a suppressor and a couple of easy deer to keep him keen.
Realise I ain't getting younger so want to get a bull tahr in the next few years. Have shot a few Chamois mainly around Nelson/Marlborough but haven't hunted Tahr country yet.
I shoot a Tikka M690 6.5 x 55mm and do all my own reloading. Still have a bunch of Norma Vulkan 139gn projectiles which is my favourite bushhunting load but can't get them anymore. Now looking to load some Hornady 143gn ELD-X for a Tahr trip next week but looks like the weather is against us.
Don't do as much freshwater fishing anymore but looking to spend more time on the briny over the next few years getting some experience before looking to buy our own boat.
Cheers
