did ya shoot snything?what was the weather like rained all day here in the bay
Picked up petree this morning to check out some Sika habitat. He was buzzing from his first Sika kill yesterday but thats his story to tell.
The weather looked great on the way up, 6-12deg celcius for the day and no wind. A dusting of snow in the hills making the place eerily quiet. A walk with Binos out gave us a good look around and before we knew it midday arrived. An apple and some Le Snacks disappeared and it was time to move on. After checking more Sika sidling tracks to feed faces it was time to burn some powder.
Sitting in behind the binos i pointed to a small orange clay clearing waaaaay up the hill (1020yrds), there was/is a small white rock just left of its centre (you could not see it with the unaided eye) I casually mentioned it was petrees turn to shoot and got that "WTF" look
In behind the Nightforce he settled, getting the eye relief just right petree adjusted the parallax and putting some shoulder into it the 6oz trigger got the usual dry firing treatment. Making sure the crosshair never left the 4 inch rock when the sear dropped i started inputting data to "Bulletflight".
1018yrds, 12deg C, 27.90 InHG, 19.9 deg shot angle, I let the slight R to L air current cancel out the spindrift.
Petree was comfortable behind the rifle and had bunched my pack up with his left hand making a super stable rear rest under the stock, a couple more dry fires and he was ready.
I stood 10ft behind him and called out "ready". Watching the pressure trail i saw a hole appear in the orange clay 2 to 3 inches above the 4 inch rock, impressive shooting. He had never shot the rifle before or at that distance, had it been a deer we would have it hanging in the chiller.
Sleety showers slowed the late afternoon down but with 5 Sika seen for the day who can complain !!!!
Good stuff fellas!. I take it, petree got a jap on an earlier outing? Well done. I am looking forward to getting back up that way and some old haunts myself. Ya better have more than an apple and a le snack in your bag as well.
I can get quite hungry watching everyone else do all the work:thumbsup:
Your a good bugger 7mmsaum
Great stuff:thumbsup:
hello all got some good news its been a long time but finally have found and shot my 1st sika just a little yearling but for me and my friend that has never hunted b4 and brought a pair of boots and cloths the day be for,it was a great morning
two hour slow walk from the car park we walked the same spot i walkd alone the week before.it was a nice clear morning with a slight brezze in to the face as we were geting enuff light to see we come to the 1st clearing but no luck so we kept on walking to the second clearing we poped our heads around the corner to see nothing so we moved around a bit more to sit down so we can see the hole clearing and have something to eat and 1st thing i saw was the white ass of the sika.the heart started pumping and the adrenaline kicked in i tryed to keep stedy , resting on a brach i was still moving as the deer had seen us i had to let one go and boom ,[o shit i missed] we see it run down the bush line then next thing it runs staight out in the clearing with out thinking i put the cross on the front shoulder and boom.[shit i hit it ]my heart starts beating even more i couldnt belive my luck as we watched it roll down the slip we sat and just lookd at it lay ther next min it tryed geting up just to drop again and roll all the way down to 30meters from me ,gutted it and took our picture we carryed it out and i was even back in time to have a rest b4 my game of rugby.

Good on you, Petree, wind in your face good, wind in deer face no good!!!
Hi guys,
anyone heading out to the Kawekas this sunday or monday. Just moved to NZ and looking for someone who can show me around.
Good on you for doing that with the young fella, if only there were blokes like you over here my hutning life would be a lot easier. Such a different culture in NZ. When we were in Taupo this guy was caping a red stag out the front of a hunting store and no one batted an eyelid other than to come over and admire it. Here I avoid telling people I'm a hunter because I know I'll just be criticised which I have had many many times.
Just another reason why I love the place and while I'll be back year after year from now on!
Any place what I can reach easily from Taihape road?
That stag is waiting for you now James. Should be hard antler very soon :)
Welcome Petree, looks like you have been well looked after............well done on your first Sika!
Of all things I found a box of Budvar at the local 4 Square for a good price so yep I'll drown my sorrows.
I used to be pretty good at catching trout :(
And deer.....
Bwahahahahahahahahahahah
