    Kiwiana Gongs!

Hi all, interested to know what people have done for home made gongs? I’m just starting out, thinking cast iron pans or bbq hot plates?

Both of those would likely fracture after a few centre fire rounds.
I have a few ar500 gongs but also a couple of old wear plates off a brick forming machine which work well.

Ar400 min ,ar500 better. Used cutting edges off loaders and earth moving equipment including digger teeth work well. Other than teeth we often used old edges for wear areas on other plant so often not easy to get hold of. Obviously try around local engineers and dealers for replaced ones. Hardest part is mounting them. Very hard to drill and can be difficult to weld too. Bullet impact can crack and break welds pretty quickly. Longer the chain or wire holding them the better for absorbing shock.

Awesome r77mm and MSL, I would have thought my options would work but amazing how they would shatter. So a cook thick hard steel. Will keep that in mind.

Doesnt need to be that thick.

I use hardox 450 wearplate 12mm thick. Works beautifully. Ive been shooting them for years now and they have no damage at all.

Gidday Mark, I've got some AR500 12 mm rounds (200mm and 300mm) sitting in shed, heading up your way in a couple weeks. Can have a couple for what I paid if you're interested. Think they were $25 for the 200mm and $50 for the 300mm.

Need to be two welded together. Have a single one at 700m and the 6.5CM makes massive dents in it - even have a 143gr ELD-X stuck in it....

No cracks or splits, they are flat with a cut down one welded over the hole in the middle. Don't give a clear "ping" as sandwiched together but still okay to hear from 800m. Got 12 pieces for a box of Waikato from the local contractor
