Middle aged Not too Fit - But just want to get out there

    Hello All,

My name is John and some prefer to call me Jonno.
I have joined this forum because i want to get the heck out of the house and enjoy some quiet time in the bush.
If you wanted to go hunting in South Africa I could answer about 50% of your questions - However I have absolutely no idea about hunting in NZ, except what I have seen on TV.

It appears that you have to be super fit and strong and most documentaries I have seen are blokes that are between 17 - 35 years old and are built like Land Rovers!

I want to reach out to all hunters but particular my age group 50-60yrs

    1. I cannot scale cliff tops and run down them
    2. I probably cannot carry a gutted animal on my back very far
    3. My middle aged eye sight is starting to tell - But I have a backup

    I own the following firearms:

    1. Marlin 336 in 30-30 Cal
    2. 308 TC Compass (Modified)
    3. 10/22 Ruger Semi (Modified)

So i think that most bases are covered.

Now to get out and do some shooting and find some relatively easy to access hunting grounds and some Good Buggers that will let me follow their shadow.

    Cheers - Jonno

The big advantage is older guys have is we are stubborn bastards. I can stubborn my way pretty much anywhere and like an old bulldozer I’ll just keep plugging on. Running everywhere you miss all the animals too. The 308 will serve you well for most NZ areas. Where are you for a start?
The range of what we think and do is limited by what we fail to notice. And because we fail to notice that we fail to notice, there is little we can do to change; until we notice how failing to notice shapes our thoughts and deeds

    Welcome Jonno,

Being new to New Zealand if there was only one book you could read to get your New Zealand hunting grounding it would be Red Deer In New Zealand by Lentle and Saxton - Any library should have it.

    Cheers Mark.

    Welcome John.
It takes 43 muscle's to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger pull.

    Welcome @Zulu9

Get as fit as you can. Very little of NZ is flat, haha. Stairclimbing or hill work is best, progressing to more of the same carrying a pack.

Look up your local NZDA club, and inquire about the HUNTS course, it is well worth it.
