    New from Auckland

    Hi guys,

I browsed around a bit on the Forum, and instantly decided to join.

I am keen to learn from the forum in terms of the do's and don'ts of New Zealand hunting.

    Cheers

    Welcome and enjoy.
It takes 43 muscle's to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger pull.
What more do we need? If we are above ground and breathing the rest is up to us!
Rule 1: Treat every firearm as loaded
Rule 2: Always point firearms in a safe direction
Rule 3: Load a firearm only when ready to fire
Rule 4: Identify your target beyond all doubt
Rule 5: Check your firing zone
Rule 6: Store firearms and ammunition safely
Rule 7: Avoid alcohol and drugs when handling firearms

    Hi Hotbarrels,

Originally from South Africa. So I have a good amount of South African experience, but have not been hunting in New Zealand as yet. At this stage my preference will be anything, really.

My battery of calibers consists of 22lr, 7x64 Brenneke, 8x57JS and 416 Rigby.

O, and I am right handed!

How long have you been in NZ for?

    Don'ts.

Not sure on what you knowledge of NZ birds both Native and pests are.
To start with don't shoot any birds until you have someone identify them for you, especially if you are hunting in doc blocks. Chances are its a native bird and protected.

    Do's
Enjoy our self, take lots of photos, share you stories with us.
Try tagging along with some locals and learn from them.
If hunting and using doc huts make sure there is enough firewood for the next person. Cut and bring in some next to the fire.

I have been in New Zealand for just over a year.

Thank you for the advise. Yes, the best way to learn is to tag along with the experienced guys. I am keen to maybe join the NZDA as well.

Nzda can be good depending on the branch. They do party hunts Which is a good way to get experience.
