    New to Canterbury

    Hi Team,

Not new to this Forum, but will be new to Canterbury.

Got a new job in Christchurch and will be shifting down from the Waikato in March.

Having lived and hunted in South Otago, BoP, Hawkes Bay and Waikato, I'm not sure what to expect when it comes to hunting in Canterbury, but just the research alone gets me all excited!
Have shot countless goats, but not a single deer or pig yet. Obviously no Tahr or Chamois either. Super keen to get onto Wallabies as well. Hopefully it will happen soon.

Looking forward to meeting with everyone down south, even if it's just for a beer or a coffee!

Photos from my very last hunting trip in the North Island:

The bridge on our road in Hanmer needs some serious work, but it falls under Hurunui not Christchurch. The way its going it might fall sooner in they get on with the repairs.

Welcome! I'm still coming to grips with the size and scale of the mountains and I've been here since 2010.

I shot goats and pigs in North. I like the goat meat. It `s better than sheep.

    Hi team,

After safely arriving in Christchurch on Thursday, I decided to go out for a quick hunt today in the Tenahaun area.
Didn't take my rifle with me caus the fridge is still in the transit with the relocation company. No point shooting something if it can't be stored in the fridge.
Only saw some old signs, but the country was magnificent. Lucky to be hunting in this region.

    Few first impressions:
    1. More wasps than up north. Don't know if its's just this block.
    2. Descending can be difficult in steep terrain as there are no trees to grab onto. Might treat myself to one or two trekking poles.
    3. Binoculars and range finder are used way more often. These were gears that I didn't normally carry up north.

Currently doing some research on the Doc blocks around Timaru/Fairlie way. Will head down next weekend to try to get some wallabies.

Looking forward to meeting you friendly fellow Canterbury hunters in person!

Nice picture. Are you using iPhone, or Sony? Sometimes, to make a good shot through a lens of camera is the same pleasure as taken from a rifle. Only difference is got no meat to eat You are still in moving ah, we got somethings in common, I heard a place near SH72, cross the white little bridge and go up north east, cross river and then will find lots fishing & hunting good stuffs.

Welcome, I live in Timaru and I have to say Canterbury is a great area.
I'm more of a fly fisherman but trying or spend more time hunting as my two boys are getting older and more interested in hunting.
I love the Mackenzie country, never get sick of those sights.

Enjoy your time here, its amazing!
