Hello. I am new here. Does anyone know of any courses/ clubs where my son can learn the basics. Solo mum can only teach him so much.

i did one of the first Hunts courses central North Island in the late 80s. best thing i ever did.
yeah it looks really good though i think my boy may be a bit young though at 12...
Have you thought about smallbore rifle shooting?
That's indoor target shooting, typically on a 25 metre range.
Clubs will have rifles that a new shooter can borrow.
Could be a good way to learn how to handle a rifle and how to shoot under supervision at a relatively low cost.
Indoor small bore shooting would be a good start for him.

Shut up, get out & start pushing!
how olds the lad rebecca- iif you are Ok with it .id be quite happy to take him out on a couple of short outings - Ive another bloke whose in throes of obtaining his firearms license so were doing a bit of practical field experience so when it comes to theory he can relate a rule to a real situation. Im more than happy to take him along for experience and more than happy to talk to you about it if you want -no cost involved its on the house ,cause im pleased to see another young one whose decided to join the clan ,but has a mum who supports him. after losing one of our greatest young members this week im sure the old hands on here would agree anything that passes Tobies legacy onis indeed a good thing! BTW -Im basically a wildfowl smallgame shooter at present so its 2-6hr trips.
Welcome Rebecca. A boy of 12 is not to young to be introduced to firearms but he is to young to get his FAL. Being taught the ropes by a safety conscious firearms handler at such a young age will stand him in good stead for life.
It takes 43 muscle's to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger pull.
What more do we need? If we are above ground and breathing the rest is up to us!
Rule 1: Treat every firearm as loaded
Rule 2: Always point firearms in a safe direction
Rule 3: Load a firearm only when ready to fire
Rule 4: Identify your target beyond all doubt
Rule 5: Check your firing zone
Rule 6: Store firearms and ammunition safely
Rule 7: Avoid alcohol and drugs when handling firearms
I would also recommend the NZ Deerstalkers HUNTS course as a starter, as I have heard many good things about it. Also check with your sons school and see if they offer small bore as a sport option. (secondary) He may not quite be there yet but worth looking into. There are a few small bore clubs around chch and they usually have some way of catering to younger shooters. They teach good safety practise and range habits that will help later on, especially if he decides to get his license.
The local Handloaders association may also be worth a look at. They are usually open to the public on Tuesday evenings and they offer opportunities there as well.
If you are also interested, I may be able to show both yourself and your son an opportunity to shoot air rifles. This is a good way to start as you are able to own one yourself without a license (I am of course presuming you are over 18 seeing as you have a 12yr old son) You can then spend time with him, supervising him learning, until he can progress later on. And getting started with a reasonable air rifle would be a relatively inexpensive way to learn. It is also a lot of fun.
