Thread: New to hunting: Caliber decisions.

Hi Everyone,

I'm a young guy new to Hunting but not the outdoors, I'm a keen outdoorsmen with a lot of experience as a guide, trapper, and tramper.

I sat my license test last weekend so will hopefully be able to get a rifle in the next 6 months or so.

What are peoples thoughts on a starting caliber. I live in the south island and regularly come across reds, fallow, tahr and chamois so they are the likely candidates for a hunt.

I've been recommended 7mm08 by a few people and 270 by a gun shop. For a beginner the differences between calibers seem to be moot point but I want to set myself up for the future.
