    New Shooter

    Hi All,

I have been target shooting with air rifles (field target) for about 3 years but recently got my firearms licence. I'm looking for a new rifle in .223 for target practice (~3k budget). Any recommenations? Also interested in Canterbury target shooting clubs.

    Cheers,
    Alex

Welcome Alex. I am sure you will get some good advice here.
It takes 43 muscle's to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger pull.
What more do we need? If we are above ground and breathing the rest is up to us!
Rule 1: Treat every firearm as loaded
Rule 2: Always point firearms in a safe direction
Rule 3: Load a firearm only when ready to fire
Rule 4: Identify your target beyond all doubt
Rule 5: Check your firing zone
Rule 6: Store firearms and ammunition safely
Rule 7: Avoid alcohol and drugs when handling firearms

    Hi Alex, welcome.

Is the .223 purely for target practise?
Or something you might end up shooting goats or hares with?

    Hi dogmatix,

Yeah probably a bit of hunting as well. I'm doing a bit of reading at the moment about what might be suitable. My starting point was a Steyr Pro Hunter. Some say it's ugly (not really a concern of mine) but also overpriced. I'm heading up to GunCity in Chch this weekend, anything you recommend I take a look at?

GC staff will also push for sales.
The steyr has quite a flexible stock, but if it fits you well and appeals, it's a good rifle.
Don't forget to get good optics.
