Newbie from Rotorua

Hi team, name's Chris, based in Rotorua and very much looking to get into hunting!

I've always been a fisherman but seasickness takes a lot of the joy out of it, so figured that you can't get seasick while hunting!

After I got my license, I ended with a Howa 1500 (308) which I took on a guided meat hunt last weekend around Horopito. I managed to shoot a sika but the blood trail stopped! So I'm on the hunt still for my first deer.

Other than that, I work as a lawyer in criminal law and do a bunch of firearms-related cases (was previously a cop in Auckland). I also do a bit of fish artwork which I'm hoping to expand to deer art, so stay tuned!

Hope to meet like-minded people around to go hunting with, I've joined the local branch of the NZDA but have yet to go to a club night.

Hello, I'm also new to this forum but I used to hunt in Rotorua Lake. It is a wonderful place. I'm impressed with species such as deer, goats, pigs, and wallabies here. So great.

Hi Richard, thanks for the motivation! I'm yet to see a deer, goat or pig in the wild, so would be grateful for any assistance you might be able to give for the area around here!

I have one more post to go before I can post some pics...

Wallabies would be a good place to start. Seen them every time I've been in the bush in Rotorua. I've eaten wallaby legs in a stew. Completely inoffensive red meat.

Now that I've reached 5 posts, here are a couple of previous paintings that I've done, with a work in progress of a deer. I was fortunate enough to swap most of my fish paintings for people's unused fishing gear in the past, and hope to do the same with hunting gear!

All the ones I've seen have been out during the day. It won't be like the YouTube videos where guys are bowling over dozens on paddocks at night, just the odd animal here and there in the bush. Not hard to hunt and something a bit different for this Northlander.

Hi Chris,
As above there are heaps of wallabies out there, lake okataina has plenty, with the chance of a deer. I was out last Saturday and ran into 3 in an hour span, all in the day time. Was training dog for deer so wasn't keen on shooting them. PM me and can let you know where else for deer.
