    Nz Hunting Newbie

Hey guys my name is Kieran and im from the Wanganui Area, keen to get into deer and stag hunting and also some range shooting. I have my licence and done some research and was looking at buying a 6.5mm creedmoor, 7mm08 or the 308 calibre. I have a budget of about $1200 for my beginner hunting gun. What do you guys reccomend? Also wondering if anyone is keen and in the Wanganui or Manawatu area to show me the ropes after ive purchased a gun i would appreciate it so much. Thanks

    Happy shooting guys and girls

Save your money and buy a cheaper rifle. For example there is an ex military 6.5x55 on T/m for three or four hundred bucks. I admit I am biased in favour of the calibre as it has little recoil, has a flattish trajectory and will handle a range of bullet weights. FWIW, I reload 139 grain thru to 160’s. Far too often, young guys go and buy the current fad and lose money when the try to move on.

If you do buy that calibre, I can assist you with reloading basics, should you venture down that path.

    Welcome.
It takes 43 muscle's to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger pull.
What more do we need? If we are above ground and breathing the rest is up to us!
Rule 1: Treat every firearm as loaded
Rule 2: Always point firearms in a safe direction
Rule 3: Load a firearm only when ready to fire
Rule 4: Identify your target beyond all doubt
Rule 5: Check your firing zone

308, lots of ammo to choose from and a calibre you can buy almost anywhere.
nothing in nz requires more than a 308 although i have now gone down the 7mm RM path.
