    UK migrant

    Hi all

I emigrated from uk a year ago. Based in marlborough. Just waiting for my firearms licence to land in the postbox so I can start to get out and enjoy the amazing hunting that it looks like we have here.

I have a lot to learn. I only had an air rifle for vermin in uk. I've been reading plenty on here, and speaking with colleagues who hunt. My intention at this stage is for one do-it-all gun (but everyone tells me ill end up with more).

With this in mind , I think I'm looking to get a 270 and the rifle everyone steers me to is a Tikka.

I'm happy to hear other opinions though as I'm a total novice.

    Cheers

    Ben

There's an almost identical thread running at the moment. Personally, yes to Tikka, I'd go .308 over .270, but you'll get lots of opinions.

    Welcome aboard.
It takes 43 muscle's to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger pull.
What more do we need? If we are above ground and breathing the rest is up to us!
Rule 1: Treat every firearm as loaded
Rule 2: Always point firearms in a safe direction
Rule 3: Load a firearm only when ready to fire
Rule 4: Identify your target beyond all doubt
Rule 5: Check your firing zone
Rule 6: Store firearms and ammunition safely
Rule 7: Avoid alcohol and drugs when handling firearms

Go to a gun shop and handle loads, I found Tikka didn't suit me but everyone is different. Find an independant shop if you can rather than the big chains.

I'm having trouble locating that thread, can you point me in the right direction please?

Yes, I certainly plan to handle as many as possible. Irrationally, I have an aversion to going with the obvious choice, so unless the Tikka really feels spot on, I suspect I may be tempted by something else.

Always be aware that retailers will only try to sell you what they have on the racks/shelf, rather than what's the optimum for fit and purpose . . .

If you find yourself over Nelson way and would like to try out a short barrel 308 at the range, give me a shout

Hey you 308 guys cut it out! Don't poach our 270 immigrants before they are born!

Seriously though welcome to the forum. Im 3 hours south of you, if you want to try a 270 before you make a final decision to buy, come on down and have a shot in the spirit of the other guys offers.

A short action 223 with the right twist is probably quite suitable, have a look at this one perhaps: https://www.nzhuntingandshooting.co....-bravo-110905/
