Decent Point and Shoot camera

Hey, my current camera is due an upgrade and I was wanting to get any opinions on what is and isn't good. I have had Panasonics and they have been pretty good. I like the compacts and I also like a decent zoom range. I have considered the Canons too as they look good in review. I was thinking the Powershot SX260 was a pretty top contender as does the Lumix TZ20. Anyone else have a favorite? The GPS function appears to be common now in the higher end point and shoot cameras too which sounds handy.

TZ20 is outstanding.

I have an Olympus FE-170 .Has 6x zoom ,compact good value for money I think.

iPhone 5 or the new Samsung ph is outstanding as well, except for zoom

Cant find anything that beats the Panasonics at the mo

I dont know if you have bought a camera yet but I have gone off panasonics. They seemed to be the best thing around at the time so I bought one for my gf(TZ15 i think). The zoom was awesome and daylight pics looked amazing but once it was low light conditions they had a lot of noise so the pics were really grainy. This didnt bother us too much but the lense cover stopped working. It normally covers the lens when the camera is off or not doing anything but instead of closing fully it only moved a little bit. It will also not open when you power it on. Time for a new camera. As I said earlier the camera did seem good so we upgraded to the TZ20 thinking this was just a one off but it wasnt. The TZ20 prefrormed slightly better in low light but not as good as we hoped and it had cool features like GPS and HD recording(which never get used) and then the lens cover stoppped closing fully!! It has exactly the same problem as the previous camera and eventually it wouldnt even open when you powered the camera on.

So, I bought her another camera for Xmas. This time at the advice of a photographer who worked part time in a camera shop we got the new Sony cyber-shot DSCHX30V. It is absolutely amazing. Its super easy to use and has heaps of preset modes. Takes great pics in all light levels and has outstanding zoom for a tiny camera. 20x optical with 40x digital if u need that. Its also 18MP so you can edit your photos and blow them up really big if you are into that.
Not sure on any long term problems that may come up but it looks well built so its looking good to last a while.

I bought a Canon 260. It sounds very good and the feedback with the Panasonic does suggest they are being reined in.
Oh but my 3 year old daughter bought me a Lumix TZ7 off Trademe this morning. Should log off the conputer before she gets her hands on the mouse and uses a buy now.

Did you but as a young man?

i have a lumix and i have found it great for wot i do. 12x zoom, good picture quality as well. easy to use. and not to big to lug around!

I have not long had one of these Sony DSCHX20V. I am hoping it helps with my lack of photography skills.
20x zoom is awesome.

Got a photo of a early summer stag somewhere that I will try to find. I took it at over 2 km away in fading light off a tripod, and it was amazingly clear.

i have a TZ30, it is 20x optical and goes up to 67x digital, so far i am pleased with the quality of the photos
even the ones that are up to 2km away but it is still early days yet as i have only had it for three months

Not really a point and shoot but I just bought a canon sx50hs.Awesome zoom, takes awesome photos and also has full hd video.more features than you can poke a stick at.

I'm on canon number 3.
Nothing flash each time infact cheapies but the best point and shoot I've come across each time I was looking

Nice. This will be my first Canon and I am hoping it is as good as it reviews. My sister in law has a Leica V-Lux which is very nice, but the best i cold find one was around 700USD.

A large chain Wharehouse type store (Costco) has been selling a Panasonic Lumix DMC-Z19 for US$200 so I bought one on a whim last year. It is the same as the DMC-Z20 sans the GPS. They are both made in Japan with Lecia lens' and have outstanding optics from wide angle to 20x optical zoom.

My camera was fully submerged in the Clinton River while fishing in Fiordland National Park one warm day about 8 weeks ago. I turned it on and took a photo and thought "we'll &$@ me, this &$@er, is &$@ed ! It was water logged - no surprise there.

I took out the battery and SD card so the camera turned off in the on position with the lens open and extended and left the battery cover open - then clipped it to the side of my fishing bag for the rest of the day. It was warm with a nice breeze so I thought why not try and dry it out ?

The camera fully recovered in 48 hours and I have been using it since that day as if nothing happened.

I cannot say the same for my iPhone4 that did a full cycle through the washing machine last Sunday morning. Listen to the opening line of the song Sunday Morning Coming Down and you will understand the mishap with the phone !!

Correction: The camera is a Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS19, the model with the GPS is the DMC-ZS20

I had panasonic lumix like that. Drowned it 3 times, once in salt water. It did a year in the oz outback. Used on every hunting trip I did during that time. And it still battled away. I upgraded and gave it to my younger sister who still uses it. Amazing camera. I now have a 24x lumix which is great also.
