Apparently a no no unless you have a concession according to the Doc website. Surely all these youtube hunters and bus loads of tourists don't all have a concession to fly/video using drones?

Of course they don't.
woop woop, it's the sound of the [fun] police....
The NZ Hunter crew apparently have a concession for their drones for use on public land according to Willy when we spoke a couple of years ago. They had to keep renewing it. Just keeping to the rules of engagement.
I thought the rules were to have a permit to fly over any doc administered land and a concession if you were using it for commercial gain. ( As nzhunter would be)
Did some research. There's a lot to do if you follow the rules. $74.75 for each area applied for as well.

i think it one of those things where you do need a permit, but also doc don't bother to enforce it. kind of like hunting on doc land with a shotgun (like many pighunters do) or cutting down trees for firewood ,cutting tracks ,sleeping in paid huts without a ticket . all are illegal, but all gets done by so many people that they dont bother enforcing
That's what happens when there are too many rules around somthing. People either dont know, or end up going the other way out of fustration and to be honest, I don't blame them.
I would not push ones luck with some of those- my time in DOC we did prosecute successfully for cutting tracks - cutting down standing green native ( dead on ground okay for firewood ) not all DOC staff are warranted Officers under Conservation act in fact few are - you will strike the wrong one one day and then depends on judge on day what happens - so be careful a warranted Officer under Conservation Act can - stop search seize and commence a prosecution
In approx fifty years of hunting on doc land, I have never come across a doc worker in the field.
so cutting a track.....you are keeping access way open..thats a health and safety issue...good luck trying that one in court.
shotgun on DOC controlled land....also have small game permit....thats that base covered
dog in non dog area..thats a curly one..if no kiwi in area and dog is under control..eg indicator dog not free roaming...well its a non issue
was told by DOC staff in Timaru nzda meeting years back they cannot stop tramper with dogs...... so bit of double standard, quickly put on my dark sunnies and let dog lead me LOL...maybe dog is my emotional support animal..... but I also havent ever seen DOC worker in the field in 40 years of hunting...seen them on trap lines or weed control around edges or road sides but never actually out in block...oh hang on,yes we ran into 3 guys in wainakarua 30 years ago.we were having snooze in tussocks and old misty dog saw them coming and barked up a storm LOL.
the track one that really rings a bell was a dairy farmer from Taranaki - keen tramper decided to cut a new track up onto pouakais in ENP - so was very busy with scrub bar when caught - the tree cutting- a group of hunters had cut down about 6 kanuka and built a camp with table etc -not small kanuka about 20 feet high and 6-8 inches thru -just did not see them as native -light trimming on a track in different ball game -especially stinging nettle
under offences Conservation act -
conducts in any conservation area, any activity for which a concession is required under this Act; or
The penalties are,—
(a)
in the case of an individual, imprisonment for a term not exceeding 2 years or a fine not exceeding $100,000, or both:
I wouldnt push my luck with any of DOCS spotty herberts .Im civil to them if em on encounter ,ask what theyre up to and make sure we know who is where and usually Im armed!seems to work OK.regarding permits in my case lake ellesmere -3permits for me duck canada and feralpests permits always renewed as part of my licensing procedure each year .got shagged about this year as seems a new bloke handled my enqwuiry -got it sorted easy -no hard feeling as we all have to learn in a new job.
hook bush...down in waimate area..the main access track up onto open area(the only area you can effectively hunt) is surrounded by gorse..what the twigs n twitter brigade continue to spout as a nursery plant..if you get in among it ,well you may well end up crying for mummy, but other than that its no nursey at all.....bloddy hard work to get through and its only by continueing effort over last 30 years that track is still there at all...it WAS a clear bulldozed track, there is another bulldozed track up off private land,30 years ago you could have driven up it...now you struggle to find it even when cross it...about 15 years ago someone, somehow sprayed the track....IF DOC would allow a helicopter to do one single spray width up track every 3-5 years the access would be simple and easy, the area would see more visitors and the greenery would continue to grow unharmed.... DOC will not maintain this track, believe me I have asked/begged many times over the years.there used to be benched track up through tussocks, easy grade..I went up with my kids and we marked it with strips of plastic bags, stayed well used for 2 years till some do gooder took them all away.now you cant find it either. so people struggle up ridge getting poked like a pin cushion from the spanyards hiding in tussocks. short sightedness will stuff the back country access sooner or later.
I've given up trying to get a small game permit from DoC, every year for the past 3 years I have phoned them for one for the Rakaia and Rangitata area. The guy on the end of the phone was next to bloody useless!.....well actually worse than that. His final words were that DoC did not have any areas in the upper Rakaia or upper Rangitata that had any small game or geese to hunt. Go figure! I do go through the 15+ minute long phone process of getting a game bird permit though. We never use to have a problem when we phoned the local district office, but now that its been centralised its all turned to shit.
thats WHY I went in and saw the lovely ladies in Geraldine office and organised small game permit in person..she still had to do it online, but it arrived within day or two..actually went in the other day re possum trapping...it appears that now that is done on similar permit and no longer block specific.
Hahaha, I can go better on that @Micky Duck, last one I got the lady said she didn't know how to do it properly yet (trainee) so delivered it to my letterbox later that afternoon.
it must have been your aftershave mate......
ask to speak to the man who knows what hes talking about[
Ask to speak to the woman who holds the whole place together - there is one in most organisations
She's always underpaid and usually overweight and drinks a lot of Diet Coke
Put a tiny bit of sunshine into her world and watch everything roll out smoothly...
Last time and I say it's the last time too, anyhow there was no office staff in attendance at the geraldine office. Sign on door to get permits on line.
Does anybody have any comments on the original title of this thread? Cheers
There was one cause a ruckus up here in the Able Tazzy a few years ago Ryan. All the companies are on board now and they are actually really strict on it.
Definitely will need a permit if you want to put one in the Able tazzy skys.

Yeah, heaps of people using them without permits.
Better off without em imo, they are noisy obnoxious things, back country feels a bit less like the back country with one of them flying around.
Makes life a bit harder for the small time YouTuber I spose, but thats the trade off to keeping wild places wild.
A pox on all back country drone pilots, had one fly over us up the Oroua a year or so ago, it was a very unwelcome event in an otherwise peaceful outing. I go up the bush to get away from technological intrusions into our lives, so to have one buzzing around really ruined the day for me.
Went to Niue a few years ago, we were in a small cavern with about 3 metres of water as its floor, absolutely stunningly beautiful setting with the sunlight reflecting off the water to bounce all over the roof, I can still picture it in my mind. My kids were swimming around, while my wife and I lazed on the edge admiring the view, when another kiwi tourist turned. We said our hellos, bit of a chat and I asked her why she came to Niue. She told us she enjoyed the untouched natural beauty of the place, with few tourists and minimal human impact on the landscape. Her husband and son then joined us, unpacked their drone and flew it around in the cavern for the next 10 minutes "getting the right footage". I avoided them like the plague for the rest of the time we were on the island.
further to this -Iwas out on a scoot&shoot with a mate whose very conversant with thisDOC permit /rakaia rangitata issue . DOC have no concern with those riverbed areas so No permit required.we shot the rakaia for 3yrs GSPF for a lot longer and the issue didnt arise.if you want rakaia trouble try dealing with ashburton district council.caution do not wear your finest hairpiece it willbe shredded .GSPFcan speak to this from 1st hand experience!!
