    Editing video

My camera (panasonic lumix FZ100) takes video in AVCHD format,

when I edit it with windows movie maker I lose the sound, Windows media player won't play the sound of the AVCHD files, VLC media player plays the sound but loses the video.

Is there a free editor that will handle AVCHD? Failing that, can I convert it to another format to edit without losing quality?

    Have a read of this.

Get a free converter for AVCHD files -> .avi and you can continue to use the free Windows Movie Maker . It does mean converting the files twice (once to .avi, again when rendering the final clip) so if you've got a few clips to convert, select them and have it do it overnight. I'm not sure how crippled the free version is compared to buying the full pgm though.

Have you heard of bit torrents? Premier is ok, Sony Vegas is better. Final cut pro for Mac is just ok. Pinnacle do a good entry level one. But don't expect much from the free ones..................

I use Premier Pro CS5.5 (Editing), After Effects (Colour Correction), Magic Bullet Looks (Styles) and Twixter (Slow Motion sequences). All found with free trials online and easy to learn with tutorials on youtube.

Beware that you'll lose quite a lot of quality converting to .AVI (at least I did)

I find converting to mkv ( x264) give me the best balance of quality and size, I have also had good success with .avi (divx) but have had to tweak settings to optimise quality but needed more messing about.

Theres bucket loads of programs out there you can use, but handbrake seems to be good for me
