    I need a new camera

I'm after something like those mini-DSLR jobs, with the lens assembly on the front. Point and shoot basically, but maybe some room to learn without going to an SLR.

I want good photos, good HD video recording capability, plenty of zoom.

Pretty simple requirements I guess. For a long time I was trying to get one that ran on AA batteries instead of propriety rechargables but I'm giving up on that. I have a budget up to $750NZ or so - I don't need the flashest, latest model, especially since I'm rough on things and it likely won't last forever.

What do people suggest? If someone has a camera they'd like to recommend could they please post some example photos and/or film that it has taken?

Whenever I have a question I'm going to create a new sub-forum to post it in.

I forgot to mention, it needs to have a protruding front lens that I can attach an adapter to for attaching it to a spotting scope etc. I think the adapter has bushings for 27-58mm

    That rules out the TZ20

Have a look at those 4/3 camera's gimp, small changeable lenses. But I don't know how much shit they can take.

The camera that Clay has looks pretty good. Not sure what model it is, but it seems to have the features you are looking for...
If it's not a first round hit you need to practice more

I just bought a new Fuji finepix, great little camera with a digital viewfinder so you can use it like a DSLR, lens is not threaded unfortunatly.

What speed SD card did you get with it?

I've been told to go as high as possible (class 10) to cope with the HD footage.

    SDHC

    Class 2 = 2 MB/s
    Class 4 = 4 MB/s
    Class 6 = 6 MB/s
    Class 10 = 10 MB/s

I've been told, class 6 is the minimum you want for HD filming. Your camera specifications/manual should have the recommended speed for your camera.
