Watched the video with the wife last night, she was going OMG OMG , it's still there, paddle to the rocks !! she was still talking about it this morning, he actually kept very calm under the circumstances I thought

40 ft great white- nah - Mrs White as our DOC staff called her was seen a number of times of the Islands here in New Plymouth ( seals on a no of them ) she was estimated at around 20-22 feet -has not been seen for a no of years - came up to a few fishing boats out here and scared the living shit out of them - the biggest recorded are still not over 30ft - you tube deep blue now that is a big great white there is one video of a diver alongside her I believe of Hawaii - the divers name is I believe Temporary Diver

I had a mate like that, to keep track of the bullshit guys like that spout they need to have a good memory. He didn't and it wasn't long before he tripped himself up.

He's gone quiet....

Just need to remember that we haven't all lead monotonous one track lives.

I had a 6 meter haines, and I have to admit that even a big Mako cruising alongside made me feel the boat was too small. Had one of the arsholes leave dirty great teethmarks down my Transom for no apparent reason at all.

I had a young couple from Idaho on the boat one day. They had only seen the ocean properly a couple of times and never swam in it, so We went out about 20K fishing and then I suggested they have a swim. The girl jumped up on the side and then stopped dead. Was either a blue or Mako of about 3 meters hanging out alongside.
They were quick to decide not to jump in.

We upped anchor and I drove in halfway to shore and then let them off for a swim, which they enjoyed. Back home the girl asked how I knew there were no sharks there..... I just told them there probably was, its just you didn't see them.

No you misunderstood (or maybe I didn't clarify enough) - that was the comment old mate made about it while his arse was doing unusual things underwater and he was making funny noises after just turning around and seeing a bloody great killer whale checking him out. As I said the story gets more animated and bigger every time he tells it - I have a feeling it made an impression on him haha.

Nah, just been fortunate to experience a few unusual and interesting occupations and also a few stints in crap ones. For a variety of reasons including injury redundancy and company closures I've never been able to remain in the same role (longest stint including training time is 9 years which is unusual for working people). Sick of retraining all the time now tho, pain in the arse. Have to do it again shortly most likely, unsure what will be on the cards going forwards.
@7mmwsm kind of nailed it, I would have preferred a more stable work history rather than bouncing everywhere but am fortunate enough to have come out of it well enough.

As far as marine, used to own a charter boat which was a pretty good gig. RENA killed that though, literally - had inquiries and bookings the day before the ship grounded and woke up to basically everything stopped. Sold the boat after a couple of years of it sitting idle. Ended up working on the salvage tho, swings and roundabouts.

For those that are interested. The Whangarei Harbour Monster was spotted at No.11 buoy last night. An easy 6 metres apparently and very fat. Not far from the last sighting. I've done so many dives in this area when scallop diving was allowed and I was towing my son around on a sea biscuit in Smugglers Bay last weekend (SE corner of the map).

You probably should refer to it as "one of" the monsters, not "the" monster.
Where there's one there will be more.
Bring on the Orca and ban cage diving.

You're probably right. The local hysteria has fixated on one shark, in reality, there are probably many more.

A few years back as part of shark tours on Foveaux one operator was using old wetsuits to stuff full of fish frames as it was "the perfect medium" for the sharks to rip apart for the tourists to see... teaching them that wetsuits are full of yummy fish, now that's a farking smart idea...

Big shark jaws,fact but not in our time.Over in WA shark jaws & teeth have been found in large rocks broken up.Jaws put together were about 2mtrs across.They estimated the shark was about 20 meters long.They'd take some feeding ah.
