Thread: Manawatu Gorge to Dannevirke in 4 minutes.

I thought this was quite cool. And they stopped at the Mangatera pub.

Reminds me of the days when I used to do the same time in my Morry 1000, Nearly went in the river one early morning, those days you had a chicken wire fence to stop the drop!!! Had a mate killed in a Mark 4 Zephyr, went to sleep on the curve before the bridge on the southern side, just before the turn off to the Ballance? bridge, he hit the abutment on the RH side after going across the road.

The gorge has taken a few lives and casualties. I'll see if I can find some pics of some wrecks.

Only been thru there once on the other side in a railcar in those days, another mate and some friends tried to raft the river on a 44 gallon drum contraption, they got wedged on som rocks in the middle of the river, had to tie a rope round himself a jump in, the river was running high, managed to swing to the road side bank by swimming down stream. Secured the rope and the rest got out handover hand to safety, the remains of the raft are probably still there!

The fella didn't survive. It was carting meat and fed the eels for some time. RIP driver.

That was a couple of days ago by the looks of the road works. All of those roads are well finished.

I've managed a stupid fast time that i wont mention trying to get to the hills before deer oclock came upon. not quite this fast tho

Did that drive for 3 years then once the slip came along it was over the saddle,i don't miss it in one year three guys drove of the end and died including that halls truck you have a pic of.

This guy was a lucky one at the Woodville end of the gorge at the balance bridge.
