my daughter is looking at one of these s/h and i dont know enuff about them to give an opinion . so my question(s) is are they good for an entry level dslr ? are there any known "idiocyncrasies" or faults to watch out for ? what shutter count would be considered acceptable?

This maybe of no help, but I've still got a d200, purchased new in 2007. It's now on about 320,000 clicks. It's been all around the place, hot and cold, wet, not dropped often but did live on ute seats a bit, plus in back packs. Main lens is a dx 18-200mm. Got a second battery when brought.
Its still taking great photos. Great ergonomics, and I think I have mussel memory with it, as I can pick it up, turn on, zoom and take a pic, on par with drawing and firing a pistol.

Great camera, and no signs of dieing yet. Even the original batteries are going OK.

So in short, I back nikon quality. Just make sure it feels right in the hand would be my tip.
Please excuse spelling, as finger speed is sometimes behind brain spped........ Or maybe the other wayy.....

I had one before upgrading to the d700. Really good camera, but getting old now. When I pulled mine out to sell it was coming up with an error on screen.

They are a tad old now.
Depends on $$ wanted by seller. Do you know what price?
Would I buy it? No...it's old and unknown number of shots taken.
    Anyway, look here...

Cheap enough then, but at the age of it she should carefully check the lens for dust, mould, etc.
If lens has mould then walk away.

I would recommend buying one of these with low shutter count.

    Love the DX 18-200

It even does pretty good under ground 2.5sec exposure

    Great pics.

The dx 18-200 is a amazing lens for the price.
    So flexible for use.

Buy the best glass you can!!
You can always update the body (and for that measure, the glass) and keep the glass.
If I was still traveling heaps and hadn't lost my interest in taking pics, I'd buy another nikon body, and keep the dx for using on it.
