During the winter months I have seen deer marks on our range.

Last year I heard a stag roaring around a hundred yards behind the top range.

I haven't seen one there yet but pretty sure I will one day.

I remember shooting a big match on Taylor range in Waiouru.
There would have been a couple hundred people on and around the range. A Jap spiker hung around for an hour watching everything going on.
Didn't give a shit about the shooting either.

Someone on here mentioned that the horses didn't seem bothered by artillery...

A friend of our family was doing his military service in Waiouru. They were doing bren gun training, came over a rise and there were a few deer in front of them. Venison turned up in the mess for a while.
The guy that helped me get my first deer was in the Territorials, they were doing mortar practice and as they were zeroing in on the target a bunch of turkeys were walking towards the target. They ended up landing rounds in amongst the turkeys. He said it was surprising how few they killed.
