Thread: Superzoom

Hi there. Am considering a superzoom camera for taking photos and videos of.l animals while hunting. Got about $700 to spend. Any suggestions? Thanks very much.

Canon SX60/70. Good combination of big zoom medium size. @StrikerNZ filmed this trip we did a few years ago using one. The bull Tahr playing on the big rock were close to 2km away.

@GravelBen do you know much about low cost zoom? Some of your gear is worth more than most folks rifles...

@Joe_90 It also weighs more than some peoples rifles! My biggest lens is about 2kg on its its own.

I haven't really used any of the small superzooms enough for a proper comparison - their biggest drawback tends to be low light performance because of the small sensor size. Pretty impressive what they can do for the size and weight in decent light though.

went through this in the last year.

starting with a $ 700 budget, i would look at a camera of around $ 450. the reason I say this is that you will need to get a decent tripod to make full use of the camera, and then extra bits such as additional batteries, bag etc.

I got a Panasonic Lumix FZ80 when it was on sale, and so far I am extremely happy with it. it is not without some limitations, but that is par for the course with anything under several thousand $

P.S. tripod I got was a Slik Sprint Mini 2

+1 for cannon SX60 or 70. Should be able to get one second hand in good nick for under $500 and probably less. As @ebf says you'll need a good tripod
