280 Imp max

I have just got this going this weekend.

It was originally a .280 Rem 700 XCR II.

It has the usual goodies, McMillan Hunters Edge stock, light weight firing pin, fluted bolt & factory 24" barrel.

I chucked a 30 cal T2 Terminator brake on it I had lying around & it timed up perfectly, recoil is non-existant.

Initial load development is looking very good with 162s extremely happy at 30-3050 fps, shooting 1/2-3/4 moa in wind strong enough to blow my chrony over :oh noes:

180s aren't showing as much promise yet at 2875-2900 fps, which isn't an issue as this case really suits the 162s with their lack of recoil, especially with a suppressor.

Here it is with 162, 180 beside the 7 Rem Mag.

Considering it isn't even bedded into the stock yet I'm really looking forward to getting it sorted, might even get a suppressor organised for it.

Just having a laugh tiger, seems a bit odd to improve an improved cartridge to gain seemingly only 50fps or so.

Well if your going to improve it why only half do it?

When back up the range this arvo, still a bit windy.

Really very happy with the performance so far, pretty much 7RM velocities or better considering the 24" barrel, with 10-15% less powder, great for suppressor & barrel life :)

I use ADI 2225, 67-68 grains, kinda won't fit in a standard 280ai without compressing the hell out of it, gives the best velocity so far.

Might try RL 33 but it will probably be too slow for the 162s, could possibly perk up the 180s a fair bit :)

I guess disadvantages that are obvious are long action required & fire forming.

I guess advantages are, fits in a standard magazine, more rounds in a standard magazine, good brass available, more velocity, could be made in a lighter action Kimber etc

Its just something a little different, giving a bit more performance :)

280 cal is underrated I reckon (not even biased :D )

My 7x64 will do 2913 fps with 55 grains of H4350 with the 162 amax I don't know whether it's worth an extra 12 grains of powder for a 100 odd fps :x_x:

I get 3050fps with a 280ai and 61gr of rl22 but it is hardish on the brass, Nosler custom 280ai brass only lasted 4 reloads before the pockets loosened up. I'm backing down to 60gr and 3025 fps for the new brass.

Barrel is 26"

Are you using Lapua brass Greg? Perhaps I should have fire formed some Lapua instead of buying the Nosler custom brass.

I'm using Nosler 280ai brass, 24" barrel.

The brass was previously used in a couple of 280ais, reformed, then annealed & is on its 6th firing through the 280 imp max.

If I don't care about brass etc, 3100 + is easily achievable....

Might have a play with RL25, haven't found any RL22 yet :oh noes:

I'll pep the bastards up for tomorrow. They shoot well however.
The chrony showed 3060-3100fps for the 140 partitions...@63grains of 2213sc...Accuracy for those was crap...what would or could be max for the 140?
I don't want to burn the earth just find the next half decent accurate node; Obviously I'll work up...

It is an Improved 280ai so has a little more capacity.

I haven't run 140s in it.

There is plenty of data out now for the 280ai
