    8.6x47 Lapua

I built this in April to replace my 338BRX AR15 upper, my favorite Pig rifle upper, when it became obvious we were going to loose all the centrefire semis forever

I wanted something light & short to replace the 20" barreled 338BRX, I had everything in stock except the barrel which is an 11.75" 1-9 338 True Flite.

I recycled the ASE can from the BRX, I had the Rem 700 TI action, McMillan Hunter Edge stock, centre feed 10 shot double stack mags, btm metal & Timney Calvin Elite trigger.

I chose the 6.5x47 case because I knew I needed a bigger donor case than the 6BRX to get the velocity desired & didn't want it to be as big as the 6.5 Creedmoor or 338 Federal to try to keep the noise down with such a short barrel, the ASE can as basically indestructible

It shoots the Barnes 160TTSX pretty well at around a brisk 2600 fps

These guys weren't that impressed with it last night, the 10 round mag pays dividends, even though I only used 5 & lost 3 bits of brass

Very happy with the 3.5-10 x 50 VX3 I took off one of my other uppers, perfect for this rifle & its intended purpose, those little buggers are pretty tough to hit when they are close & in top gear

Yes Sir...I do like that one..
Shot a .338 whisper for years on game with those 160gr TTSX bullets at 2450fps and they did the dead well.
Have you tried loading some 300gr subsonics for it?

    No not yet.

I would rather use a proper expanding sub projectile, like the Lehighs in my 300 BLK & I must get them sorted in my 510Wsm

I'm looking at doing something similar and am waiting for hornady to see what they come up with in developing the 8.6 creedmoor
They are talking silly fast twists of likely around 1-3

1-3"?? I find that hard to believe.
The 1-8" or 1-9" twist in the .338 will stabilize the heaviest and longest .300 grain projectiles at sub speeds. My .338 Whisper (the same cartridge that Hornady are trying to claim as their new 8.6 Creedmoor) was a trueflite 1-9" and shot very well even at 1000y. Velocity retention is amazing. Lucas used 1-8" .338 Shilen barrels for the original .338 whisper builds in NZ.
I like the sounds of this one of Gregs built on the tougher and slightly longer 6.5x47lap brass though, Id say it will have much better usable supersonic velocities and unlike the .338 Federal could be loaded long in a short action with a variety of sub and super projectiles

1-3 seems like madness but It has something to do with the amount of turns the bullet does inside what it hits, more twists = more cutting

Its all still TBC but thats coming from the Discrete ballistics guys making the subsonic expanders.

Im real keen to see what this is like in subsonic mode, do you think you will be able to fit enough Trailboss in the case to get close to 1000fps with what you plan to run subsonically (lehigh im guessing)

looking at the side by side bullet i could start with this one and rechamber to creedmoor at a later date if they come up with something subx-ish that "I just have to have"

i'm also pretty keen on running a cheeper sub round like a hollow point cast, so im wondering if the silly fast twist will lead to leading of the barrel
