Heavy hunting 7-6.5 PRC

Finally got around to sorting a great load for this today, had 3 to chose from

It has a Bartlein 1-8.7 Rem Varmint barrel, ex 260 T3 Tikka Sporter action, GRS stock

We are going to use it as a long range quad hunting rifle

I like using solid copper projectiles & it really likes 153 & 162 Hammer Hunter Tipped projectiles, it wasn't as consistent with the 147 Apex, too many choices...

Certainly giving up a bit of BC but that isn't everything & certainly can't fault the accuracy with the HHTs in all the rifles I've used them in

7mm in a 6.5prc case right? How do these perform so well?

Yep 7mm-6.5 PRC, 1/4" shorter case than a 7 PRC, nice case design, great Lapua brass

You are pushing the 7mm 180s nearly as fast im pushing the 6.5 156s, impressive and im looking forward to a rebarrel :thumbsup:

So what is the difference in case capacity between the 7 saum and that one? Would a saum throated the same performer a well?

Its runs around 2 grains more powder but you need great brass, there isn't any......

I'm running 3-4 grains under book max to try to avoid stamping the brass, 2-3 grains under & it stamps, run book max and it stamps & shaves/shiny with very little to no bolt lift indication

It shoots very well and had ridiculous accuracy at the top loads with several powders but they were clearly over loaded

It is pushing the 168 VLDH at 2780-2800 fps from 20" & ADG brass

thats interesting a friend of mine has had issues with clickers I think you fixed iv had no problems but my reamer is designed around ADG brass my 168 load is also 2930 for accuracy 20' barrel it speed up to 2975 after brake in and lost accuracy slowed it back down and its phenomenal again

It will also depend on the action, this Saum will definitely go faster but at the cost of stamped cases

It's been looked at. There needs to be a margin for the importer and freight eats seriously into that. Greg might comment.

Yep with wholesale margins you are basically left with around 8% margin give or take by the time GST is taken into account, when I looked into it

Could increase that with freight breaks but unfortunately no where near enough to even consider it in a commercial sense especially considering they would be pretty expensive compared to other projectiles

Once you use them you don't even consider the cost of them but until then they are a very niche product

what chrono you using?you sure it doesn't need calibrating?the speeds you get are amazing/unbelievable.

Not the rifle in the thread, its a 308 Springfield Waypoint but that shows how I shoot the rifles, off a bipod & rear bag on a concrete benchrest

The Absolute Hammers are generally faster than the HHT's, but the BC is lower

This rifle will easily hit over 3000 fps with the 180's but the accuracy isn't as good & i prefer copper projectiles for hunting

unreal.what's the secret?is it brass?I take it your using RL26?your getting speeds out of the 6.5 prc case that a 7 prc will be hitting pressure around with the same projectile yeah?

Brass & barrel length, yes RL26, the 7 PRC is 1/4" longer and the 7-6.5 can't compete for capacity but makes up for it & efficiency, like for like the 7PRC will be faster, accuracy .....who knows ?

Hammers. My experience on deer

223 52 grn HH sent fast are amazing for their size. Great on fallow.

223 60 grn HH at 3280fps very good but not as good as 73 to 80 grn ELDM/Targex/Sierra Tipped.

223 68 grn HH Tipped. 3,000fps. Great potential but have only shot goats. Will use on deer though. Think they will be the real deal.

260 and 6.5 PRC 124 HH @ 2850/3000, fantastic

270WSM and 117grn at 3,500fps, extraordinary

I have shot many many Deer, quite a few goats & some pigs with the 69 AH at 3900+ fps out of my 6 CM thermal rifle, from 10 to 380 yards

Absolutely fantastic performance, second to none IMHO, no recoil, laser beam

Looking forward to trying out the 75 HHT's in my 6 CM imp at 4000 + fps

I’m keen to try some of the 199gr HH pills in my 300 prc. Ballistacally should match or outdo the 212eldx to 700y or so and I can’t imagine anything surviving one of those
