Thread: 22lr lead

Not a recipe as such, but this seemed the most appropriate place to put this.
Put a lamb neck in the slow cooker today, upon shredding the meat I found the 22lr projectile used to slaughter the lamb.
Given 22lr projectiles are predominantly lead, will the fact it has been stewing in the slow cooker all day introduce dangerous levels of lead into the meat?

my quess is no - if the projectile is still intact - but I would be finding a new home kill butcher - bum shot - bullet should have never been anywhere but the head - someone got their angle all wrong

Lead won’t break down during the cooking process. Lead particles enter the meat as a bullet breaks up passing through. Most of these will be at the entry. Given the low velocity projectile probably pretty much intact?

Good to know. Yeah it was still mostly if not fully intact.

Ive been cutting up roast and found projectile before..... plenty of us have cracked teeth on birdshot..and much of eat has been eaten if the amount of STEEL pellets that pass through then end up rolling around the bowl afterwards is anything to go by.

scoop that steel up -recycle it my man BTW the greenies will dance for you to the duckshhooters waltz!!!

Intact bullet not an issue. Finding a copper jacket fully separated is a totally different story, the problem with lead is that it is very similar to how calcium behaves in the body and minute tiny bits of almost vapourised lead can enter your digestive system and stay. Not ideal - twitch twitch flop buggered nerves, brain not braining etc etc. It's one reason lead paint and organic lead components are considered more risky than metal - easier to absorb.

Unfortunately, it's much more damaging to young children who are laying down clacium and the rest of the growing things - I'd advise against feeding it to them but for yourself and other adults I would not rate it very high risk once in a blue moon and small amounts.

I remember crunching on a copper jacket in some venison neck stew, friend told me it was a head shot and well away from the bullet wound. I guess it was probably shrapnel from impact. Dont think i would have consumed much lead.

That's the reason I don't do duck shooting. As a young fella I chomped on a bit of lead shot while eating some duck. It's a bit like eating fish your not sure if there is any bones in, I just can't relax and enjoy it since any chew might be the bit of bone or lead in a quacker. I see they sell small metal detectors for checking the duck breast which would probably help ?
