    Grate for fire pit

Hey guys, hopefully someone can help out.

The wife would like a fire pit built, and I was wondering if I got a bit of steel mesh (uncle has some woven steel mesh lying around his farm in HB) would that be suitable for grilling a few snags over?

If not, what sort of mesh?

    Cheers, John

Something like this, but not in stainless.

Would it be suitable? Or do I need stainless or ?

Or just keep using the BBQ?

Yea depending how big an area it covers you may want to make a grate of flat bar on edge underneath it to support it from sagging etc.

I come from the land of wood/charcoal bbqs! Any type of steel or stainless steel mesh works, as VC says though, you just need a frame underneath to stop it sagging.

Thanks. Initial size will be approx 1m across but in an octagon shape.

    Plans and dreams.....

Add that to the list for a pergola, pizza oven, sausage stuffer, greenhouse, storage vaults for the camping gear etc.

    Don't use galvanised steel.

I was back at my uncle's on the weekend and here's a photo of the wire mesh. Approx 3mm wire and 15mm opening.

    Old crusher screen panels.

Guess it'll need a good blasting or will the rust always be a problem?

Nah just let the fire do its work. It'll burn all the bad stuff away.

Yep, get it hot and wire brush it then cook on it.
Once it is covered in fat no more worries!

Sausage stuffer is easy, TM 65$ mincer and sausage stuffer in one. Works a treat
