    Homebrewed Mussel fritters

First dive in and get your mussels, I dive into Pack and save and also grab a pack of beer batter. Mix up homebrew beer batter or use that stuff you buy and set aside. Now setup and open the raw mussels onto a bowl, no crabs or whiskers and drain off excess liquid . When ready heat skillet with oil, dip mussels in batter and fry till nice and brown, could have a swag of chips going in the oven as well, must have your vegetables, washed down with a brew great stuff.

I love battered mussels-not quite as much as oysters but still good.
    Not really fritters though

Nar, if you mince them up you get a lump of batter with a vague mussel taste, whole mussel bingo you get the full Monty and you could mix in to the raw mussels some garlic and sweet chilli sauce, then into the batter, look I'm dribbling all over the key board , off to get some.

Haven't ad proper mussels for about 5 years. living in aussie until 18months ago and just don't get out to get them there. I was there 10 odd years.
oddly enough came over for the lads u17 club footy trip to the north island. Only kiwis in the group. Had a feed of greasies at a fish and chippy just back from Kelly tarltons. second time I've been there. Fantastic feed. Suggested they try the battered oysters and mussels-for some reason they don't batter oysters in NSW
general consensus was they were very good. Mussels not as much but still alright.

Yer, the ones you get for the F/Chip shops are first steamed open then cooked in batter, you get a lump of rubber. All seafood should be cooked from raw, but it`s not bad raw as well, I just don`t go a bundle on the Kina.

To be fair, I don't remember them being that rubbery, It's the taste. they still tasted good but not the same as oysters.

Now if you want good fush and chups the best of the best is the Mangonui fish shop, absolutely delish bluenose and then if you get a craving for a hole lot more sea food head down to Stewart Island. Hunting trips down there are a gouramy of sea food exstragaza , it`s hard to do any hunting.

Haven't done a stewie island trip since the early 90's but yup we generally did alright out of the sea, had to coz there was feckall deer around.
I think that was when we won the Americas cup in the big boat.
I'm in CHCH so unless Mangonui is close to Kaiapoi, they will be cold by the time I get them home.

Those grey ghost on Steward Island are cunning little buggers, very lucky if you see a bum. Look for a F/ chip shop that sells fresh sea food, get a pot of opened raw mussels and have them cooked as fritters with a scoop of chips, You will taste the difference to the steamed ones.

And not only but also wok steamed mussels, get 20 live in the shell , can of coconut milk and sweet chili sauce. Wack the mussels onto the wok with half tin of the milk about to two TBL spoons of sweet chili sauce, bit of garlic and crack on the heat, cook until all or most are open. Dive in, the quickest gets the most. Bugger, my computers floating.
