    Hydration

    Hello all,

I think there is a recipe that may be the same as below or similar in a thread somewhere but I can't place my finger on it.

Ive tried alot of hydration brands over the last little while but most have alot of sugar.

Was talking to an older person a couple of months ago and they gave me this home made recipe and it works fantasticly.

    100gm of pure sea salt
    2 teaspoons of Epsom salts
1 teaspoon of Cream of Tartar

Blend well in a blender and use at a ratio of 1/4 of a teaspoon per 500ml of water. It taste slightly like a strong mineral water and you can use water flavor drops to mask the saltiness if required of mix with raro if you want the sugar boost for extra energy going up hill!

Sea salt give you sodium and other trace minerals, Epsom salts is magnesium, and cream of tartar is potassium.

There you go, that explains it all. I've definitely noticed a difference when taking it. Having chilled water makes it better too.

There are also rehydration sachets you can get at the chemists - orange flavour and taste disgusting - the one thing that they are good for is replacing fluids when you have the shits

Thanks for that, Have always used Himalayan Salt/Raro mix but have gotten slack with fluid uptake. Never a big water drinker but have been getting a few bad dehydration headaches over the last year or two so being a bit more diligent. Must be an age thing.

While I'm usually a big fan of DIY options, I've been using the Hydralyte fizzy tabs from Chemist Warehouse recently. Not a cheap option by any means, but just super easy to deal with on the hill. Way less sugar than the bulk powdered options like Powerade. No magnesium though.

My grandmother used to make 'health drink' out of lemons and a mixture something like this, plus sugar. Was always warned that drinking too much of it might have dire digestive consequences but I liked it and seemed somewhat immune to the... squits.

From Google: Cream of tartar is the potassium acid salt of tartaric acid, otherwise known as potassium acid tartrate or potassium bitartrate. Apparently (at some stage, anyway), got by scraping out used wine barrels. Which has to be a good thing - natural foodstuff and all that.

Ive tried those, they are actually very good but I noticed too they don't have magnesium. The powdered sachet version dissolves alot faster too.

The one I've been using is similar to the first one:

    100g sea salt
    8g Epsom salts
    2g cream of tartar
1g of mix to 1L of water
Add orange juice, cordial etc to flavour

    Seems to work OK.

I'm confused. What am I missing? 1g/litre is 0.1%. For the stated required 1% solution you need 10g/L. No?

Good point, so 10g is about 1.5 teaspoons...... 1/4 of a teaspoon per 500ml like I was doing is quite salty

Squincher....very good stuff. Four squirts per 800 ml bottle(poweraid) is good ,eight is recommended but I find it too sweet at that. A single squirt or two, with your powdered would be awesome.
