Looking at getting one, does anyone have a model they use and recommend?

Pack out heavy
I'm just using a basic sunbeam dehydrator for jerky and homemade dehy meals. The box shaped one with 6 trays. Simple and does what it's meant to.

Cheers for that, I’ll see if Briscoes have one they occasionally have sales .

Fixed it for ya....
Beware, often Briscoes sale price is on par with what everyone else normally sells for. and their method of listing leaves a lot to be desired...eg Sets of glasses were up to $20 now from $9. Then you look at the $9 set and it was $9.00 and the $20 set is down to $18....

The box shaped one is a bit more space efficient than the round ones, the. It comes to storage, if that helps.
Edit - I meant that you get more food into the square one than a round one, for a given footprint they take up in storage.
For beef jerky? If just home use, like to pile up fishing & hunting protein supply for a year, then you do `t need a machine, just time, and I think you have place to hang those smoked aged beef slice.
So be it
The other important issue with round vs square dehydrators is the airflow. Because square dehydrators flow the air horizontally they are way more efficient, meaning they dry the product way faster. There is also no need to rotate the shelves like a round style where you need to move the lower shelves to the top and vis versa part way through the drying process in order to get a nice even end result. We have a shipment of dehydrators arriving in our warehouse tomorrow. If you interested take a look at the specs on our website. Discounts are always available to forum members.

I've made jerky in the oven on fan bake and low temp. It's turned out great. What does a proper dehydrator do that would make it worth getting one?
