I just managed to get my grubby little flippers an a single penguin sized cast iron camp oven .
Seasoned it yesterday, and keen to give it try out tonight...but.
Plan is to make a sheppards/cottage pie in the thing. I have my minced beef etc and mashed spud all ready to go, but need to know the best way from here.
Do I : cook it with lid on, on top of wood burner
Cook it lid on IN woodburner
Us the gas bbq with either lid on/off options.
I like to have the spud browned on top.
Answer asap please. I am kin starving
On top of burner, load hot coals on lid to brown potato.
we make shepherds pie this way...
take left over roast mutton and put it through the mincer,add handful of raisins or sulatnas,similar quantity of mixed veg, chuck it in a dish add enough liquid to make it moist..if any gravy left over from roast chuck that in too....chuck ya mashed spuds on top,dont forget to play rally car driver in the top with a fork....
chuck in oven on medium heat till liquid starts to bubble and then call it done.
to brown the spud you need heat to come down onto it...maybe chuck coals on the lid....

Iv seen a couple good youtube vids with good ideas. I cooked a pork belly in mine over a wood fife but had to add wood halfway through so it got plenty smokey.... not in a good way though.
Otherwise worked mean :)
End result was great for the meal. But not happy with the (fairly pricey) cast iron cook ware from Stephens.
The pot lid turned out to be some sort of plastic :( Which obviously too a dislike to hot embers
Try cooking in coarse salt, I did some pork belly on in the Webber, put down a thick layer of salt on cast iron plate, put pork on top, skin up, cover completely with another thick layer of coarse salt and bake, I had a thermometer in mine and work on temp for cooking. Wipe off all the salt a enjoy. The crackling is wow. Also cooked some tiger prawns this way, really nice!
Keep your beady little eyes peeled for a second hand one, they turn up often on trademe etc.
How did the penguin turn out?

I bought my camp oven from the warehouse of all places...good heavy cast iron,the heavy cast iron lid has a big lip on it to hold embers with added bonus it fits our medium sized skillet.
We have a 4.5Qt. one of these. It is ideal for smaller roasts etc.Quote:

Just use it like a regular casserole dish and bake it in the oven. You can brown the meat in the bottom and then deglaze with the liquid
