Vacuum packers for meat - Whats good one.

Hi All - after some advice as I'm sick and tired of throwing out a 1/3 to a half of a roll of vacuum packaging bag material because the little unit decides its not getting the right auto results.

I'm after one that independently seals the bottom of the bag without the vacuum being achieved. If I could find one like this I wouldn't have such a pronounced loss of bag material and be a happy boy.

Can someone point me in the right direction of a good unit for this?

I currently have a Sunbeam Foodsaver unit.
    Any ideas?

    Carpe Diem..

I’m watching with interest. I have a cheap no brand one that I’ve modified to use my vacuum cleaner as it wouldn’t pull the skin off a rice pudding.
I’m thinking of getting one of the above and just using the vacuum cleaner.

I've got a Russel Hobbs seal fresh. Works well for me. Seal the bottom, cut to length put in meat and vacuum seal.Done all sorts from scallops to whole legs venison. They do like their own brand of bags as some brands are thinner.

@2post You interest me strangely. When / if you have the time could you put up an image or two of your "Mr Sucky" adaption?

    Thank You.

+1 does the job. Still to try out Ryan's toasted cheese sandwich method.

I agree with the comment about using the grade of plastic that is designed for the specific machine. I used some “whatever brand” plastic in a vacuum packer the other day and it didn’t like it at all. So I dug around in the kitchen until I found some more of the plastic that came with the machine and it worked perfectly.

The first incorrect plastic I used was pretty ordinary and one leaked in my Engel on the way home, so I’d say the plastic isn’t all created equal.

Innovation vac seal. You will find it in most H and F store . The plastic that comes with it is pretty strong and works like a charm.
I got mine from a local fishing store.

Do they vac out well? I’m keen to buy one but found my cheapie won’t pull the air out let alone pull the bag around the food. Hence the dodgy mod.

I have the better model with the twin pumps. Works great and has a separate "Seal" cycle just to make a bag. The std cycle is labelled "Bag".

Without finding the post I think it's just toast the bread, put some cheese inside and vac pack. Then at the end of a long day carrying two deer back to camp, boil the Billy and and toastie for a couple minutes in the sealed bag. Let it cool while you use the water to make brew, eat, sleep, repeat.

Really how? I put the bag in @Ryan_Songhurst and it goes to auto mode sucking then sealing ...

Did I miss something in the instructions?

There doesn't seem in my model to be a seal only function (just goes to straight vacuum mode then once vacuum achieved will seal) to create the bag which is why it tries to create a bag from the roll doesn't get to vacuum level and just keeps sucking. In most cases just keeping sucking I'd be happy but this is just infuriating...

    CD.
